I sent in a 4506 for some work a few months ago and it was done satisfactorily. The gun needed one small part plus replacing of the mag release assembly. All parts were in stock and the work was done in a reasonable amount of time.
Based on another experience I had with a 3rd Gen gun, some parts can be a problem. But because the 4506 shares so many parts with the other .45 caliber guns the situation should be pretty good for a good while going forward.

In my opinion, the 4506 will be your most loved pistol. I own two, and also purchased a 1006. They are scary accurate and can take a beating and come back strong for more. It is my favorite S&W pistol of all time, with the 4566/63 coming in second. I guarantee you wont be able to kill it.

You really have to follow the sales on GunBroker etc. My guess is that a 98% gun with the box and spare mag could go for $550. Most of the guns out there seem to be police surplus. Mine was a police gun and I paid about $400 for it with only one mag and typical holster wear etc. BUT what I wanted was a gun with Trijicon night sights even though they were worn out because they could be replaced relatively cheaply.
In the end it just comes down to what you are willing to pay for the gun knowing that they are not made any more and availability is going to be limited in the better conditions or with options like night sights.
I don't want to sound cavalier about money but whether you pay a little more or less is not all that important. What is important is that you get what you want and then enjoy it. Most of us are into this gun stuff for the enjoyment and not for the business or investment aspects of it.

The 4506-1 is a superb duty pistol. Accurate and bet your life reliable. They shoot like lasers. I qualified with mine shooting a 98.6 day and 100 night score.
I've purchased two 4506-1's in the past year. I paid $495 for one and $550 for the other.
LNIB examples will run around $550 or a little more.
My 4506-1 is more accurate and has a better trigger than my Sig 220. Both my 4506-1's are as accurate as my HK USP 45's.

It's like a d*** golden retriever! Everyone who gets exposed to it loves it!

OK! I think I found a 4506-1.
Its in a BLUE plastic box. Hammer and trigger are black.
Original grips are straight in the back. (The gun has curved Hogue grips on . ) Novak rear sight.
Has two magazines with black folowers. looks maybe once fired. (98-99%)
serial number starts with a V.
Few questions. Does it look like a late production 4506-1?
Is it the one that uses 10mm frame?

I carried a 4506-1 while a deputy, and was the last to go kicking an screaming to turn it in for a Glock 22. Now no longer having to do that, I have a 4566, and I'll put it up against any other 45 for reliabilty an accuracy for an out of the box pistol!!

There has been a surge in popularity for the 4506 in recent weeks or months, there's just something about them. I have been watching them on and off for several months. I started by watching the 645, which came before the 4506, and also has gained (re-gained?) popularity. I was able to find one that was being sold quickly by a large dealer in the Denver area for 500.00, a 4506 no dash, but it had had the rear sights replaced, and the single action trigger was rugged, but the prices were escalating so much that I chose to buy it. I had watched some no reserve auctions that went to the 800.00 neighborhood. When I got the gun, I called S&W about the trigger, and they sent me a shiping lable without my requseting it, did the work and sent it back without charge in only a couple weeks turn around time. I was elated, as none of that had ever happened before. It is cosmeticaly very nice, and I am in the process of fitting it with a taller Novak fiber optic sight to accomodate the afformentioned adjustable rear sight. There are enough old timers and knowledgeable young timers out on the hunt for one that, when a nice one turns up, the bidding can get viscious! If you want one, I'd suggest that you get one, with price as a secondary consideration. NO MO PLASTIC! Flapjack.
No finer S&W 45 was ever made than the 4506 or the -1. Mine was $509 back in 1990. It's the only auto I've ever had that has never failed in any way...ever. No doubt it will outlast me. I wouldn't hesitate getting another-or the 4566 for that matter. These were the creme de la creme. As far as I'm concerned, they still are.
Thinking back some years I have to qualify my statement about the 4506 being the only auto that never failed me. There was another... a German made Sig P220. It too, was superb and would feed anything. I haven't as yet got over trading it.

i am, getting one this week.i have a bunch of mp guns,but guys like 18 dai,have really been giving me an education on the 3rd gen gun.i follow his and other guys posts .these are the guys who put thier life on the line ,and when they swear by a pistol thats good enough for me.one question dai,or anyone,i have had 4 neck fusions over the last 8 years, last one was 3 years ago,i was pistol whipped and then beaten in the back of my neck,and 4 vertebra were shattered and the discs were blown out.
my only concern is recoil.if its to sharp,my neck just aches from the scar tissue when sudddenly jarred.is the 45 recoil ok in this gun.i can shoot a m&p compact 9mm,and thats ok.and my friends 1911 recoil is no problem.so is the 4506 recoil ok also? especially if i find some 200 grain ammo

i am like dai, ithere is something about these 3d gen pistols,thats just keeps bugging me to buy a a couple when i see them for sale. guy's,which model sw gun is closest to the 4506 in 9mm??

I have four fused disc's in my neck, and have no problem with the recoil of my 4566 as long as I don't shoot it to much, also have Ulnar nerve damage to both arms running from shoulder to my last two fingers. So I keep my shooting down to three to four mags, an switch to 9MM.

The later ones have the black MIM trigger and hammer. Black trigger and hammer always have the 10mm frame style. The early ones have the stepped frames.

you guys getting a 4506 in 98% condition, in the box for 500 or 550 are doing really well. The ones I see lately on Gunbroker go for much more than that.

i know a guy who has a bunch of single stack 45 auto mags.like new. will these single stack mags fit in the 4505,4566 models.these are new or like new mags,and i have seen sw auto on the bottom.
i guess my next question is what are these single stack 45 auto mags worth,or what is a fair price to offer to the gent.thanks for advice guys
