4506-The legend

Didn't realize the integral railed 4566s were rare. I have one that was an original sample gun used for the Fresno County contract. Very nice pistol but I don't think I have ever shot it and it looks like it was not shot prior to my owning it.

Same as mine then, Fresno County contract. They made them in melonite/black integral rail, but the all stainless are very rare indeed.
Do you have the box? I do and there's a special cut-out in the foam that holds something that I've never been able to track down?
Can you solve this mystery?

Gorgeous 4566, any idea who made the wood grips?

That's a great pistol you have there. I carried the 645 and then 4506 as a duty pistol when we first transitioned to pistols from revolvers in the early-mid 1980's. They would, in fact, chamber empty brass. I then got a 4516 for plain clothes and off-duty. That was another great gun. In my quest to collect as many of my old duty and carry guns as I can in retirement, I've been able to find a rough 4566, which i blasted with aluminum oxide and completely went through; a 4516 that is in pretty decent shape; a 6906 on which I had the receiver refinished and I then rebuilt,; and two 3913's. I'm having a Hell of a time finding a 4506 that won't require a mortgage, but I'll keep looking.

Have it's shorter cousin, the 4566. It was my last duty pistol and gifted to me on retirement. The 4566 replaced our previous duty auto (our first auto), the M1076 some time after the 1076's were discontinued. Used the same duty holsters and mag pouches.

The 4566's were indeed bullet-proof and like stated, would even feed empty brass. ANY sort of malfunction was all but unknown.

Just after I left, after much complaining from the younger Troops about carrying "the boat anchor", the M&P .45 FS became the duty gun.
Now, they've jumped on the plastic 9mm bandwagon with a Sig 320-something.

The 4566 spends most of it's time in the safe. For .45 Auto, I'm much more a M1911 guy, but still a fan of that ol' SS 'boat anchor'. ;)

I wasn't going to respond to another 4506 thread because of of all my redundant reply's over time here. I'll just say, (again,) that my 4506-1 was the first firearm bought with my new FFL back then. It was also the first S&W semi automatic I ever had as I was more interested in S&W revolvers. Colt made my semiautomatic .45's.

10+ years later I was bored with it, tried to sell it and $400.00 was the most I was offered. I thought that maybe my 4516-2 top end might work on it and it did wonderfully. (This was before I, and many others didn't have internet and no real resources.)

I'm very happy I didn't sell it. It's a fantastic pistol and fun to play with upper wise.

Jim
