Opinions on the 4506. I looking at buying one. I think I can get it for about $380. I don't own a 45 and I think this would be afordable way of owning one.

Of all my guns, my 4506-1 is my favorite. It is big, super accurate, ultra reliable and shoots softer than a 9mm. I would jump on it.

That sounds like an awesome price for a great pistol, cheapest I've seen them is about $425. Should be no problem hiding it under your habit. ;)

MLK18 pretty much summed it up. They are good guns that get overlooked since polymer high capacity guns took over. Good price. Try it out and I think you'll like it.

I had one for a while and sold it off when I mistakenly went "all 1911". . It was a great gun. VERY well built and reliable. My main gripe was that the grips were a bit slick for my liking and replacements were limited. A local shop just got two nice 4506 LE turn In's this week and I was "thinking I may need another at the $390 pricetag. :-).

I think they may be the toughest 45 cal pistols ever made
and the 4506-1 models are even tougher according to a guy
at the Factory I talked to last week. Apparently they beefed
up the frame and the slide with the -1 model.

They did this with what they learned producing the 10mm
variations called the 1006. Supposedly the -1 models
are an ounce and a half heavier because of the extra
metal left in the slide and frame.

I had heard rumors to that effect and I held out
until I could find a -1 model for myself.

I really could not tolerate any of the DAO models
however. If you get one, make sure you get all
the function that was designed into them.

Oh and remember this. They are offensive pistols
not defensive pistols. Remember that when you
feel how much they weigh... They are within an ounce
or two of regular Govt model 1911s however.
I thought they were heavier until I weighed mine.

Well not that it was hard. You guys talked me into it. Thanks

If you can get a 4506 for $380 jump on it! Great price for a great gun you will love.

I love mine. Accurate, easy recoiling, great SA trigger, easy to break down, etc. I paid 450.00 for mine, LE trade in.

where are you guys finding these great deals on 4506's?? I would sprain my wrist getting my wallet out at that price....

Do the later production 4506-1 have silver or black trigger and hammers? The earlier serialed 4506-1 looks to be silver and later ones black, but I've never seen one with a black decocker.

My 4506-1, made in 1997, has a black trigger, black hammer and a stainless de-cocker. My understanding is that the model was last catalogued in 1999, discontinued in 2000 and manufactured in limited production runs until 2003.

I bought my 4506 back in mid 1990. Of all the various types and weights of bullets from the Speer 200 gr Lawman and CorBon rounds to 200gr SWC's it's never failed to feed or extract in any way. I think it's one of the best 45's ever made for out of the box reliability. A tad heavy but for dependability it's second to none.

I liked it so well that I recently bought a NIB little brother to keep it company...the 4566TSW. No other 45 I've ever owned can or has lived up to the 3rd Gen Smith's for reliability.

Well what-a-ya-know ! I had collected dozens and dozens
photos of 4506 pistols from all the auction sites before
I bought mine. I never even noticed the difference in
hammers and triggers.
I went and scrolled through my photos and I just now noticed
that some of the -1 models had dark triggers and hammers.
Mine has silver hammer and trigger. None of the 4506s have
black de-cockers but a few of the 4566 pistols did have a black
decocker along with the black trigger and black hammer.
So you are saying my -1 is an early model with the silver
hammer and trigger. I didnt know that. Thanks

The 4506 is my favorite .45 period. And I've owned a Sig 220, and currently own a Glock 21 as well. I like the 4506 much better than both.

Softer recoil do to the weight and an outstanding shooter. Perhaps it's just me, but I'm much more accurate it with it than I've been with other .45's.

Sits in my night stand for HD.

Thanks for all your help. I picked it up today. It was $399 but they threw in a extra mAg and a rug. Now I am going to try and find taer down instructions and a 10 rond mag. The side says HPD 505. I was told it came from Houston Police Department.

Congrats! The 4506 is my favorite 45 bar none! I've also got a LE trade in 4506 that i picked up last fall in like new condition. I also have an early hooked trigger guard model, love em!

Congratulations!! Great pistols - I'm sure you'll love it.

I have an early 4506 with the hooked trigger guard and caged adjustable sights with tritium dot inserts. Like others here, it's easily my favorite 45. It's also my bedside HD gun. Mine has been 100% reliable for ~5,000 rounds of all types and it's very accurate. It handles wonderfully, points naturally, and shoots softly with minimal muzzle flip.

Enjoy!
