Taking a look at a one owner 4516-1 today. No box/papers but said to be in great shape. Anything specific I should be looking for with this model?

No particular problems with the 4516-1's. Check what you normally would on any semi auto pistol.

I'd check the barrel hood, breech face, slide to frame fit, barrel to slide fit. I'd also take the top end off and check for rail wear and frame cracks - and be amazed to find anything wrong too. ;)

Good luck! Regards 18DAI

Thanks, pretty much what I figured. Will post pics if it follows me home.

Just on the odd chance, but check to see if the magazine is marked "4516-1 only". It's my understanding that the -1 was an improvement to address FTF and jams and the redesigned magazine was part of plan.

I have a 4516-1 and it has been flawless.

Well, the 4516-1 followed me home after I parted with $380!! It looks to be in pretty good shape and very lightly used. One of the two magazines (both yellow follower type) appears to have maybe been used once. No box but I am not complaining. Pictured with recently acquired 4006.

You got that for $380???!!!!:eek::eek:

You did great... I won't say what I paid for mine.

Congrats and enjoy!!

Yes, the seller was asking $400, I offered $380 due to no box, and he accepted.

Your 4516 is a beauty! Congrats! :)

I hope you stopped and bought a lottery ticket on the way home!! ;)

You paid less than half of what I had to. But I would happily pay the same again, because the 4516 is that good! Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI

The 4516 is built just like the 645 and the 4506, that is to say like a tank. The 3 guns all seem to share the same attributes, totaly reliable. excellent accuracy, and just about rugged enough to drive nails with (or at least use as a really effective slapper-don't ask how I know).
I have a 645 that Novaks fitted my 4516 upper to. So I have a full size 645, a hybrid short 645, or a 4516-all scary accurate.
It is a heavy chunk of steel to haul around, but for serious social situations, I don't think it can be beat.
I don't think you can go wrong with any S&W steel .45.

Thanks 18DAI...Did not win the lottery, but I realize I did get a great deal on the 4516-1. Now I need to find some spare mags for it and get to the range.

I have been carrying a full-size Colt Govt. in a Milt Sparks Versamax 2 for while so I figure the shorter barrel will be more noticeable from a carry perspective than the 2 oz or so of weight savings.
