Can someone please tell me if the magazines for a 4516-1
are different from a 4516? I saw somewhere on line where
supposedly there is only one magazine for the 4516-1. Will
one of the 3rd. Gen wizards please enlighten me?

Thanks!

Follow up question: any recommendations on either the 4516 or the
4516-1? I realize that the -1 means an engineering change, but how different is it?

Thanks!

Mags are the same.

The main difference in the -1 is the round vs elongated trigger guard, and the extra weight in the -1 from where the "steps" on the front of the frame, in front of the slide stop, is deleted.

I'm hazy on the details but the magazine followers were revised as the series progressed. There are mags out there that say "4516-1 only". I had one that worked fine in my 4516 no dash. I seem to recall there are three different color followers, and they all worked fine in my no-dash. I don't believe the magazine bodies themselves are different, just the followers, but I'm not sure. I'm sure someone will be along eventually with the details.

I have seen yellow follower mags marked, THIS MAGAZINE MUST HAVE A YELLOW FOLLOWER, THIS MAGAZINE FOR USE IN 4516 ONLY and THIS MAGAZINE FOR USE IN 4516-1 ONLY. I really don't think it matters much but the best mags are the last verision with the black follower and indented feed lips. Changes from 4516 to -1 are the -1 has a heavier frame and blockier slide and single recoil spring vs dual sping, inner/outer of the no dash and -2, -3 etc.

I don't own a 4516 but I have followed these threads for years. It seems that the manufacturing changes, to -1 and then to -2 were done for reliability issues, with the no dash model having the most problems in that regard. I seem to recall that less machining was done on the -1 slide to increase the weight.

I have been tempted by both the -1 and -2 models but so far have resisted mostly because I like my 457 so much.

I thank everyone for their help. Hopefully Friday my
4516-1 will be here. It'll be my first 45 & I'm really
looking forward to getting it to the range!
