I purchased a 4566 at auction and it is my first S&W Semi auto. When I saw the pistol it was filthy and covered in very old oil. Because of its condition, others were not bidding on the gun, giving me a great price. When I received it, the first thing I did was completely disassemble it, clean and lube, plus polish action parts to improve its trigger pull and feel. I build 1911s and have disassembled many firearms. This wasn’t hard to disassemble but reassembly was a real learning opportunity. THANKFULLY there was a listing here for 12 videos covering everything needed to put it back together.

I must say, the build quality of this pistol is incredible plus hidden under all the old oil, dirt and grime was a lightly used and mint condition 4566. I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet but I’m sure it will be a treat. This forum was a real help in learning all about this gun and the Gen 3 semis. As a side note, I could use a nice leather OWB holster.

(A note about my membership. I joined the forum about 12 years ago, something I learned when I tried to join tonight. It doesn’t show any activity but I own about 10 S&W revolvers, two Lever guns, recently purchased, a ton of non S&W 1911s since I build them, 3 1911pds (my carry pistols), and my true loves m1As/M14s. I thought I owed an explanation. I look forward to being more active and sharing info.)

Congratulations on your 4566. 4566 and 67 are usually great shooters. Very little muzzle rise and soak up recoil well and feed just about anything. Since it sounds like you are a 1911 shooter it will be interesting to hear your impressions of the 66.

Outstanding! I've been watching for a nice 4566 at something less than a bandit's price.

Congrats! I love my 4566 but I replaced the Novak sights with a set of Trijicon Bright & Tough night sights.
They're easier for my old eyes to pick up, especially in low light conditions, but unfortunately Trijicon has stopped making them for a number of older handguns.

I had it to the range and it performed flawlessly. Shot a box of hollow points through it at steel to 35 yards. I need to drift the sights a bit as it shooting left but outside of that, it is a real winner. I liked it so much I picked up a few other S&Ws semis. I’ll do a post and pictures when I get back from my camping trip. I have really enjoyed reading about the experience others have had with their guns. I do prefer the DA/SA in stainless in all the sizes available. I also prefer 10mm and 45ACP, but I did pick up a 40.
