My well used 457 has seen a LOT of use. Well cared for, it is still reliable. And I discovered that next to my LE 4566, my 457 is the 45 I shoot the most. And at my part time job at the local public range, it gets carried often too.

I got such good service from this 457, that I started looking for a LNIB example. Just to keep anymore wear and tear off my old one. As compact 45s go, the 457 is hard to beat. And even during the ongoing stupidity in guns and ammo purchasing, I saw some deals still on 457. Probably becuse they are neither plastic nor striker fired. And those facts were BIG plusses in my book.

I found an interesting example on the big auction board. An LE Special order, which I suspect was part of an upstate New York order. It had the cheesy laser etched markings, MIM hammer and trigger and metal Novak low mount sights. Also had a metal mag catch already installed. And the serial numbers after the 3 letter prefix, were the month and year of my birth. Yea, I'm buying that 457. ;)

When it arrived, a quick inspection showed the recoil springs to be new and almost no discernable wear on the rails. I suspect it was an armory spare, that didn't get issued. I swapped out the OEM factory grips for a set of TercGen curved backstrap grips and installed a rubber grip sleeve over them. Perfection! Anchors the 457 in my hand and makes it point very well. A little TW25b grease on the rails and it was off to test at the range.

The range trip went as expected. Boring relaibility. And VERY good accuracy. Which was a pleasant surprise as I have had to work at shooting groups with my other 457. This one holds sub 3 inches at 10 yards using Winchester 230 RA45T. Why not shot further out? Well, like the m&p fanboys chant - "Its not a target pistol!" ;)

Anyways, I am glad to have found this LNIB 457. Sweet shooting, easy carrying with a great trigger. A ot of 45 for the money - still. I am breaking in a new Bang Bang leather holster for it. More on that in my other thread in a few days. Obligatory pic below to "prove it happened". Regards 18DAI

Congrats ! As you know , I also like my 457's , having 3 of them . One is my 457 Special , done up by guizztaco . I have a NIB 457S which I bought from a member here . They are an under valued S&W , which makes it good for those like ourselves . I think if more shot them , there'd be a run on them .

I also picked up recently a (my first) 457. It was like new in box with 3 factory mags. I can't believe the accuracy of this pistol. It's my new traveling buddy. Excellent firearm.

Great snag, and I don't know anyone who loves the 457 more than you do! It's seems hard to believe that this one is only your second one.

I actually find the laser markings to be a little more modern and attractive than the old school stampings. It looks pretty good!

I've recently become infatuated with S&W 45s more spficly anything PC, but I can't say I've ever herd of this model, guess I'll have to search for one and get it in hand...

Whats a 457s? A stainless gun? I'm a sucker for stainless lol...

Nice find. A LE version, in black no less. What's the date of production? I see TDN prefixes from 1999, so I'd guess then or early 2000.

Does it have Ambi safety levers? Does the magazine catch use the screw on knob or the plastic one?

Actually my 3rd 457. The first one was purchased used and abused at my local cop shop. The frame was very worn and it got traded in on a 4563TSW.

Erocksmash yes, a 457S is the stainless variant. There is a clean one up on the big auction sight. Good luck! ;)

Gary I was told 2004 production for an LE contract. Yes, it has the screw on mag catch. Single sided safety/decocker which I only use as a decocker. Carried in the holster safety off. Old habits and all that. ;)

Thanks all! :) Regards 18DAI

It's funny because I wasn't ever interested in and never wanted a 457. I've got a few compact S&W .45's so another didn't make sense. I kept reading about how nice they are here and started serious thinking about one. I wanted a 457s and was lucky enough to find one a few years ago for a great price. I don't think I'd have one if I had to spend what they're selling for now though.

I don't talk about mine very much but it's a fantastic pistol in spite of it being a "Value Line" example and not a PC. :D

We'll leave the safety on/safety off debate for other forums. :D

At the risk of being endlessly repetitious, the 457 is a "Value Line" gun that outperforms its price point by several hundred dollars. The closest regular 3rd Gen I can think of is the 4513TSW. Alloy frame, compact size, 7 round magazine, just no rail and the machining is not as precise.

Even with the cheap plastic front sight and the rear sights, it's very accurate.

I don't know specific numbers, but the black Sharpie versions seem to way out number the Stainless guns.

I suppose if someone wanted an ambi safety they could use any of the ones that came on the regular 3rd Gens. Personally, I have no use for an ambi safety and the single side version makes it easier to carry.
