457 to the range

I got back to the range with the 457 today. In the interim I received three of the ten magazine springs I ordered from Wolff. I put two of them in the yellow follower magazines that were troublesome and the third in one of the black follower magazines that had a really weak spring. I noticed that the Wolff springs were longer by about an inch than the springs I took out. No problems getting those to fit in the magazines.

At the range, I loaded up four magazines with Blazer Aluminum 230 grain jacked round nose (I think the military term is "ball") I don't know where that ammo came from, probably something I bought at a gun show at some point.

All 50 rounds cycled and fired flawlessly. No hang ups with the last round in the magazine, no hanging up on the ramp. Nothing, but bang. :) My first few shots were a bit down and to the left and there were a couple of fliers, but other than that, the grouping was pretty good by my standards. The second box was Remington UMC 230 grain Ball (they use the term "Metal Case"). The results were pretty much the same, no paper plate will ever threaten me.

The trigger on the 457 is a bit gritty in single action, but nothing I plan to try to fix since my accuracy is good as it is.

I did find, not surprisingly, that concentrating on the front sight, having a comfortable stance, and paying attention to the trigger helped tremendously.

The only thing I find is that the gun does shoot a bit low consistently. As I said in the other thread, about 3" at 25 feet. It's consistent, so it might be the sights, not me. Might be.

I took some cell phone pictures of the targets and will try to post them later tonight.

I also took my 64-6 3" to the range with the grips changed to a Tyler T/round butt combat combination. As with my 13-4, that's a surprisingly comfortable set up. I'm not bragging when I say that the level of accuracy I achieved became boringly consistent. If it's not too far off topic, I'll add those pictures as well.

For some reason I shoot much better with a K frame with fixed sights than I do with a K frame with adjustable sights.

The aforementioned pictures.

This was with the box of 230 grain Blazers. Not bad ammunition for range fodder. This was after I'd first fired 50 rounds through the 64-6. As I mentioned, once I slowed down, concentrated on the front sight, and had a good stance, my grouping improved a lot. For me at least.

This was with the 230gr Remington. Shooting a little low, but I don't know if it's the sights or the sighter. Distance for all of these is 25 feet. Not competition grade accuracy, but I think it's acceptable. I also think that I need to go to the range as close to once a week as possible. Funny how that practice thing works.

This was the first box through the 64-6 and the first box I shot today. 150 grain RNL Winchester White Box. Completely reliable through the revolver, which speaks well for the WWB.

The second box through the 64-6 and the last box I shot. 130 grain Remington Ball. All fired double action. I think this was my best set overall. The four that are a bit low and just a bit left were from the first cylinder. Again, once I slowed down and concentrated on the basics, my groups improved quite a bit.

Those 3" K frame round butt guns are rapidly becoming my favorite revolvers. :D

Isn't it funny how concentrating on the basics will improve performance;).......speed then comes with practice....thats why the 3913 makes every range outing......buuuuuuuuuut.....since I installed the XS 24/7 BIG dot sites ......it has made concentrating on the front site a whole lot easier for my tired old eyes......:D

Yes it is funny how that works!

I had the 6906 there as well, but didn't get around to shooting it this time. It will definitely make the next trip. Probably time to bring the Bersa along too.

I hope I'm no hijacking my own semi auto thread, but here is a picture of the Model 64 with the new grips, as well as a bonus Model 13 with the same set up.

Very easy to shoot with. I might have to start looking for SB combats and Tyler T's for my two 4" Model 10s.
