.45ACP load data

Me and my dad went to a gun show today and we kinda got split up. When i finally found him he had bought a box of .45acp 230g JHP bullets(500 rounds). He gave them to me. Now the box doesnt say what brand they are. Only manual that I have is a Lymans and it doesnt list anything for a 230g JHP. It does list a FMJ 230g tho. Will this load for the FMJ 230g work for the JHPs i got? If not, can anyone shed some infomation on load data? I onlyl have 3 different powders: 700-X, Bullseye, and Pistol Powder. I have Remington large pistol primers and large Winchester pistol primers.

You can use the 230gr FMJ data.
Just work up from the minimum listed load.

I use 4.2grs of Bullseye with a 230gr FMJ for a light target load.

You really should get another manual that lists the loads and powders you need.

The Hornady manual is a good one.

i started out 4.5 grains of 700-x powder. I shot two rounds, both seemed alright. Brass looked good, no cracks or anything. I set it to a OAL of 1.275 but the only thing that concerns me is the lenght of the bullet itself. it is much longer than a winchester 230g JHP. I dropped a loaded round into the barrel of the gun and it made the "clunk" noise and the bullet was flush with the top part of the barrel. Does anyone have 230g JHP bullet that you know the length of? Im new to reloading and i just dont want to do anything to get myself hurt.

I have the Speer GDHP which measures .662"-.668" in length.
The charges listed are for the Gold Dot bullet. OAL listed is 1.200"

Speer #14 lists PP at 6.3 -7.4 grains Vel 759-881fps
700-X 4.5- 5.0 748-818fps
BE 4.5-5.0 742-812fps

I have only tried BE and Unique with this bullet.
You will enjoy the lighter load of BE and find the top load to be similar to factory loads.

Most all of the powder manufacturers have reloading info on their websites. A JHP is pretty common in 230 gr. Always start light and work up, or at least in the middle. Don't load all 500 until you test a few.

Primer - Winchester Large Pistol Primers
Bullet - 230g RN FMJ (Precision Delta)
Powder - Alliant Bullseye @ 5.0g
Burn rate - #13 Burn Rate
Powder range - 3.8g up to 5.3g (Lyman)
Bullet seating OAL - 1.260"
Velocity - 834.80 fps
Crimp - Light/medium
Test Gun - Glock 21 w/4.60" Barrel

I am quite sure you'll like this round.

Kentguy: are you useing the OAL data from Lymans?

I wouldn't worry about a charge of 4.5gr 700x with that long a OAL. Hodgdon lists a starting charge of 4.4gr 700x with an OAL of only 1.200". IMO your charge is way too light because of the OAL you're using. (so don't worry about hurting yourself)

Unless you are using the same exact bullet used in the manual the listed OAL is useless. The bullet and your magazine will dictate the OAL for the round you are making.

I called the company that the bullets came from(the reloaders bench) and they said that the bullets are Zero bullets. Does anyone have any load data for these?

I have been searching for about an hour now on these Zero bullets. Nothing i have found is listing 700x, bullseye, or pistol powder. Most are useing 231. Most of the loads are getting a OAL of 1.250-1.265. Im going to load a few up starting at 1.265 and work my way down untill i find a load i like. What should i do about powder charge? I was going to stay with 700x at 4.5g. I was going to use the other powders as well. Im thinking of just looking at the lymans manual and go about half way in between min and max charges. Do yall think this will be okay?
Im sorry for all the questions. I just want to make sure im doing everything safe.

As long as you aren't loading to the maximum, it is fairly safe to substitute generically provided you are subbing jacketed for jacketed. Most of the bullets I load do not have any data beyond what other USPSA shooter are loading. If you find bullets cheap, by all means buy them weigh them, and shoot them with a little common sense applied.

Sar4937 thank you for the response. I loaded 5 rounds at 4.5g of powder, 230g JHP bullet and OAL of 1.260. They shot pretty good and i liked how they were getting on the paper. Problem is im having a issue with feeding. The rounds feed into the gun perfect but they are getting stuck in the magizine

Without knowing what powder, it would be hard to tell you how much to reduce the charge. Reducing the COL to 1.20 should fix your magazine problems. You will need to reduce the charge to shorten the round .060".

Again, you DO NOT need specific load data for every bullet you load. As long as the data is for the same type, weight and profile the data is valid. That's why we start at the min and work up to the Max.
