460 Case Resizing Issue - Ridge

Attached is what my Redding Carbide die is doing to once fired Hornady brass (unsized fired brass is on the right). That is a very small ridge that goes around the entire case.

I've adjusted the die down and its still there. When no Imperial is used and when it is used, the result is the same.

Any ideas why that ridge is occurring?

The Redding insert says it is a 454 sizing die, is that the reason it seems to run out of sizing?

If so, is it safe to use like that? They do drop right into the cylinder after sizing and the case appears identical to an unfired case when in the cylinder.

It's normal.They don't resize all the way down where the webbing is.

The ridge is where the carbide insert in the sizing die stops sizing. With a combination of the radius at the entrance to the carbide and the normal gap that occurs between the top of the shell holder and the bottom of the die, a portion of the case isn't sized.

It does no harm, and isn't unique to the 460. It happens on 357, 41 and 44 mag for me. To avoid it, I now do my FL sizing with a Lee CFCD with the internals removed, and size the top portion of the case with the normal sizing die. Redding basically did the same thing with their new carbide sizing die that has two different carbide inserts with different diameters.

Resizing ring

It's normal. Technically the (fired) case is tapered (slightly). The carbide die only straight sizes it. The web is the strongest & widest part. Don't worry about it. I resize my fired brass first, then media tumble them. They come out shiny & you won't see that ring afterwards.

Now I really regret not joining the club earlier. I just got my first S&W handgun, a 12" PC Hunter, and after the first cylinder it became my favorite handgun.

Technically the case is tapered (slightly).

Yeah, it has a slight taper, .001" in the length of the case per the SAAMI drawings, just like .44 Magnum, .41 Magnum, .38 Long Colt, .45 ACP, and a whole bunch of others. These range from .0009" - .001". Again this is per SAAMI drawings. You will usually find that actual ammunition is perfectly cylindrical if you measure it. And this includes .38 S&W ammunition!!!!! Would you argue that any of these other cartridges is "tapered"????? Bet you wouldn't, but "technically" they are. Practically they are not. You only think the .38 S&W is because someone else said it was on this or some other forum, and you simply want to argue!
