Anyone know where I can buy a spanner wrench to torque the muzzle nut on my 460 XVR Performance Center 3.5"? I really don't want to have to send it in to Smith for something so trivial....

Is this just a 'back up plan' or do you have reason to believe that its loose?
If you get one, do you have a torque spec to go by? Just askin!

I can spin the nut with my fingernail.... I can snug it down a little but without the proper wrench and torque spec it won't stay.

I really doubt that Smith will sell you one unless you're a real gunsmith and maybe not even then. Don

I purchased the nut tool for my R8. I wouldn't recommend trying to tighten it up. Send it in. They have the correct torque specifications to go by.

Does the nut spin counterclockwise? To the left?

What happens is , the threads on the frame are right handed, and as you spin the nut tight - it pulls the barrel inside the shroud out.
Or so, was my experience.
So you tighten the nut and your b/c gap gets wider ! Lol! The factory has the correct process and tools to do this work. Over tightening can also break the shroud.
Just sayin.

As stated by Lou

To tighten the nut properly the barrel (all model 460s except the 12 and 14") needs to be held in place with a tool that is inserted in the barrel. Failure to hold the barrel results in the barrel being unscrewed from the frame and increases the BC gap.

Be safe

Well, always good to learn even if you're not young.

Lou the Welder surprised me by informing us that the nut tool could indeed be purchased and Ruggy reminded me of the tool that has to go into the barrel.

Considering the very rare circumstance encountered by the OP, not worth doing yourself, let S&W do it for you. Don

I'll send it in.... I just hope this isn't something that happens every couple of years. Maybe while they have it I'll have them change out the hammer from the tear drop style to the standard wide hammer.
