There's nothing worse than a "new gun day" ending with a queasy feeling in your stomach. I just brought home a used 460V, and I need your expertise.

As I did the pre-purchase inspection, my mind kept floating off thinking about all the whitetail I was going to harvest with this thing, and I must have missed a few steps in the process.

Once I got it home, I started to give it a thorough cleaning and look over, and I heard an unfamiliar rattle. Eventually I narrowed it down to the lock flag.

As you can see in the attached picture, I can raise the flag to clearly see the "locked" stamp by pushing on the lower portion of the flag with a plastic collar stay.

I was not able to do this with my one other IL equipped S&W.

Is this normal, or do I need to try and get my money back from the gun shop?

I appreciate the help!

Is there anything else wrong with the gun & do you really like it?
If the gun is OK, I would just take out the lock.

Everything else checks out, and I like it a lot. I'd just like to know whether or not this is normal before I take it to the range, touch-off a hot magnum and have it lock up on me.

Remove all of the lock, including the little pitch fork and its spring. It leaves the little "oil application port." I do not favor replacing a bunch of small extra parts that could tie up the revolver with other small extra parts that could tie up the revolver, so I would not replace it with any type of device or plug.

I checked my 460 XVR and the flag will show when I push the end with a small paper clip. While mine does not rattle, the flag is not tight.

I have put several hundred rounds through mine without issue.

Thanks for checking jboutfishn! That gives me enough reassurance to at least get it to the range and try it out before taking it back.

buck460XVR: It's not the block - I'm familiar with that rattle, and this one is definitely coming from the flag.

shawn and Grump: I'm not yet interested in removing the lock - as this isn't a defensive weapon, but I appreciate the suggestions. I have no lock pieces for that purpose.
