5" Model 10

How common is this barrel length? I've seen a lot of 2,4 and 6 inch model 10s but not a lot of 5" examples. I'm looking at a blued mint Model 10 at a local shop and find the 5" barrel interesting.

The 5" model 10s are much less common than the 4", probably a little less than the 2" and comparable to the 6". They balance nicely and were a favorite of Detroit PD in nickel.

i've only seen one in person. they are nice! there was a guy selling one locally last month for $425. looked like it was in good shape with some minor blueing loss from holster wear.

Back in the day many knowledgable lawmen carried five inch barrells in the belief that it gave them a better sight because of the extra inch and a little more velocity, but would still allow a fairly rapid draw and to sit comfortably in the cars of the age. Many SAAs were five inchers. Now, that's dating back to the late 1800s up to probably the fifties. Same thinking goes into the decision to carry a full size 1911 instead of a compact model.

I have always liked the 5" barrel. My mother has a 5" Model 10 that I bought new in 1976 and gave to her. This M&P had a damaged 4" tube so I swapped on this 5" barrel.

I really like the 5" barrel on a model 10. Very accurate and balances well. I would sell my 2" and 4" M10's first if it ever came to that. Bought it cause the price was right and it was unique enough that I decided that I "needed" one. You will be very happy with the way it shoots and handles.

Can't beat the 5" M10. Perfect balance and still easily carried in a duty holster.

Thanks for your opinions guys, the Model 10 is such a S&W icon I look forward to owning a 5" example.

There is just something "right" with an M&P with the standard taper 5" barrel, I especially like the 5 screw guns with the old half moon front sight. It's kind of like the 3" heavy barrel K-frames too, there is a certain feel and balance to them that can't be described.

You have a couple of beautiful Model 10s. To bad they never made a Model 64 no dash with a 5" barrel, that would be a great companion piece to your 10s.
