5" model 27-2

Today I picked up this 27-2. It had been a the LGS for the last two weeks. The revolver has a 5" barrel, box, all paperwork, including warranty card not filled out, unopened cleaning kit, and the brown paper. The stocks are numbered to the gun and it appears to be unfired. I was planning on buying a S&W M&P9 Pro CORE this weekend but couldn't pass it up. As this is one of my grail guns. Whatcha guys/gals think?

I think it looks great! I was looking at a 5" a little while ago but I had to pass. I really don't know what the fair market value would be.

I've only ever seen one 5" 27-2 in person. Is has several issues, and it would be $800 to take it out the door, and I am still tempted to get it, and drop $300 or $400 into it to get it refinished, get the trigger work right, and get a new case hardened trigger.

Commons sense takes over, but it still tempts me.

That is obviously a great gun. Hopefully you got a good deal.

To me for that gun with all the accoutrements, a good deal is 1200 or so.

I like the M-27-2 a lot better than the gun you set out to buy.

I had a 27-2 with five-inch barrel, but it never shot too well for me. It was one of a special run made after that barrel length was officially dropped. Your gun may shoot better. The five-inch M-27 was a great favorite of famed gun writer Skeeter Skelton.

I owned others with six and 6.5-inch barrels that shot wonderfully well. But the N-framed .357's are heavy to carry and aren't stainless, so I came to prefer the M-66 and M-686. However, if you like blued guns and the nice checkering on top, the M-27 is a fine gun. Some had the rear sight leaf too long. If so, a gunsmith can trim it to correct length and reblue the tip where it was cut.

Obviously that's a collector grade gun and I wouldn't buy that gun today because I'm not a collector.

He could probably roll it over for double the cost. Just wait and see where the prices go in the next few years. We're going to say $1,000 was the good old days.

I'm not a collector, I'm very, very frugal but even I would of bought it. We can't take the money with us when we pass on. It's only paper money and look what we're getting for it.

I was looking at $1650 if memory serves me (which I would not count on). SP, you did well whenever those 27's were purchased, whether you are a collector or an investor, or just a shooter. We would all like to get our stuff below market, what ever that is.

Well I'm always wondering what people pay for theirs so I figured I'd post. They wanted more for it but I've made friends with the manager so he accepted my offer. I spent a lot more than I set out to today but I think of it as an investment.

What $$ I/we save on most guns we spend it to buy other guns. I think it all comes out in the wash.

Anyhoo I cashed in on some investments that stopped increasing and at 63yo I figured I'd invest on having some fun/pleasure. That new 4yo grandson and me purchasing a s&w k22 for his future in shooting started it all. Then I always wanted a revolver in 41 magnum. I called my broker and got some $$$ I had tied up. After having survived prostate cancer for one year now money means nothing. If I want it and have the extra $$ I go for it. We only pass this way once. I just hope they have guns and fishing in heaven. If not I'll be back.

I'm not afraid of dying. The only things that scare me is ghosts, bullets and electricity the three things we can't see coming. ( kidding lol)
The material things mean nothing life is about family and friends. A couple of Brewskys and a pool table. It's the little things we do to enjoy life.
Having a hotdog with the grandson. Watching the grandson learn to ride his first dirtbike. Baking pretzels with him. Enjoying time with the family.
We only have one shot at doing it right. God bless, bigbill

Btw, Make Out your will now as for who gets which guns. Leave the greedy ones coal. Leave the sons and grandsons and daughters and granddaughters the guns so they can enjoy them then pass them on to the future generations of your family. Plan for them now.

Remember when making a purchase,,,

It's the cost, vs the condition, plus how bad you want it over rules everything else.

When I see something I want if I have the cash it's all over. If I don't have the cash I use the plastic then pay it off at the end of the month. I don't like passing up good or rare finds. In the past seeing used s&w revolvers are as rare as hens teeth.

I sold all of my 27-2's including two 5 inch versions one nickel and one blued. They were my favorite 27-2 because I thought they balanced the best to me.

That's a great price for one in that condition with all the goodies.

I purchased a ruger revolver that was never in a catalog in 1976 in the 200th year of American liberty it was $135 then. It's value is over $1,000 today. But really money means nothing. Our health comes first. Don't forget people are making more money today. My job today is paying over 100k today. My wife is worth over 1 million dollars already. That's a lot of s&w revolvers. My new s&w's were $699 two years ago it's all relative.

So the question is should I bust the cherry on this gun. It's possibly been sitting unfired for maybe 50 years. And guns are for shooting. I haven't looked up the date yet but has a fairly low serial number. I don't know for sure it's unfired but appears to be and when cleaning I found no sign. I do have a model 19 4" and 65 3" to shoot the **** out of. And I bought this as an investment. But I have the desire to shoot it. Maybe I should get a 6" N frame to play with. Then I'd have a 2", 3", 4", 5", and 6" revolver.
Oh they did have an 8-3/4" model 27 there too for $799 I think would $700 be a good price for that? I could probably talk them down to that. No box or nuttin but looked okay. Okay I'm just rambling now. Sorry

Shoot it, handle it carefully and enjoy it. To me the 8 3/8" barrel is worth it if the condition is 98% or better.

I too have a 5" and on occasion shoot...clean with care after the range trip and its not going to be hurt value wise

Having come with all the goodies like that, I'd have a hard time shooting it. Definitely collector grade. Shooting it will drop the value somewhat, even if you keep it in pristine condition, though unless you really beat it up I doubt you'll lose money on it. Great find!
