I have said any number of times on this forum that the 5" barrel on a S&W N-frame is the best looking and best balanced of any length. Quite a few people seem to agree. Got to looking in the safe and was surprised at how many I have gotten ahold of. Not all are factory 5 inchers and none are the pristine collectables often pictured here, but I like every one and find myself looking for more.
Starting with the oldest, my re-blued 1st Model 44 HE shipped in April of 1914:
Next is a very much abused but still shootable 2nd Model 44 HE from August 1922. It was cut down to 5" by some previous owner:
Still before WWII is this 38/44 HD that left Springfield in July of 1937. Since the picture was taken it finally got a pair of the correct pre-War Magnas:
First 5" (OK, actually 5-1/2") after the war for me is this civilian 1917 shipped in February of 1953. I believe it more properly would be a Model of 1950 45 Military:
This 357 Magnum is the gun that started my affinity for the 5" barrels. It shipped in November of 1953:
This shooter grade 45 Cal Model of 1955 was a 6.5" but I couldn't resist and turned it into a 5". It left Springfield in February of 1956:
The last two 5" N-frames are more modern guns. A cut down Model 24-3 from 1983 and a 625-2 Model of 1988.
Like I said, I keep looking for more 5" N-frames and a recent post about a 5" pre-Model 15 has got me thinking about K-frames. (LOL)
