Yes a 5 shot 40 s&w on a j frame or k frame. Wow that would be a great handgun. Tell me if there are any possibilities ?

Not a snowballs chance in Hades.
By the time you get a frame big enough to handle a .40 cal barrel at full pressure, you have an L frame. The gun was called the Model 646.
Some people have put .40 barrels in K frames, and some of them have blown up. Just not enough metal there for a factory standard gun.

Never say never. Taurus now has a 5 shot .40S&W snubby, S&W copied the Judge, if that new Taurus gets popular......
I'm just sayin'....;)

Didn't say you can't make a 5 shot .40 revolver or a 6 shot .40.
Just saying you physically can't do it on a j frame or K frame. Whatever frame it would be, it would have to have the same metal at the barrel junction as an L frame, at least.

Geez, I was joking about S&W copying Taurus (again). I wasn't arguing with you.
However, I have a 646 and I'm familiar with what it took to make a 6 shot .40 (L-frame and titanium cylinder). But, there is apparently enough metal left in a 5 shot cylinder to make it work. I haven't seen one of the Taurus 405s in person but I'd bet it's a k-size frame since it's a 5 shot. And if Taurus can do it, certainly S&W can.

right !

Your thinking just like I am. A 5 shot 40 cal. Is possible.

I'll try one more time to explain the issue. First, I am not guessing. I've seen the attempt to make a .40 on a K frame, and the five-shot cylinder is NOT the problem.
The problem is the width of the K frame at the place where the barrel screws into the frame. There is barely enough metal to screw a .40 barrel into the frame, and it won't hold up with full-power .40 loads: It fails at the barrel- K frame junction. That's why the custom builders won't make them anymore.

One of the key differences in an L frame from a K frame is the increased width of the frame where the barrel screws in.
So, yes, why does S&W not make an L frame gun with either a 5-shot steel cylinder or a titanium 6-shot cylinder?
Either could be mass produced, and the 6-shot 646 was marketed for awhile (and disontinued because of poor sales).
Maybe if S&W sees a market for an L frame .40 S&W revolver again, they'll make more of them. Why not write them a letter and tell them you want an L frame .40 S&W and see what they say?

s&w 40 L frame

I didn't know S&W made a 40 cal revolver. I would think a revolver that chambers your duty caliber would be a high seller. I understand your point of frame thickness at the point of barrel threads. With the huge improvements to firearms , I thought that the K frame would be able to accommodate the 40 caliber.
