I have what appears to be a 5 screw, K frame .38 special with a 5" barrel and a swivel on the butt, s/n 858432. Any help would be appreciated. S/N on the barrel flat, grips and cylinder match the frame. Thanks.

The swivel on the butt, and the relatively high serial number made me think early so-called Victory Model. That said, that's all I can think because I don't know diddly about those. Your salvation should be along directly from those who do know.

As far as the time frame goes, late 30's-early 40's. One thing's for sure, it's not an early K-38.

Important question: Is there an S in front of the serial number on the butt? It might be separated from the digits by a space. At that number, the S or lack of it will make a difference of about 5 years.

We assume it does not have an adjustable rear sight.

Also, a serial number with no letter in front would be read with the bottom of the grip frame up and the barrel pointing to the right, and one with an S prefix with the barrel left.

I am not normally the one to say this, but pictures would help.
I'm in total agreement.

For what it's worth, serial number 858427 shipped in November of 1941, while S861163 shipped in December of 1946.
