500 Mag & CFE BLK Powder

I have an unopened 1# can of Hodgdon's CFE BLK powder kept inside, heated and air conditioned home.

I bought it maybe close to a year ago, had not really investigated it but in these days of most everything good being out of stock, I bought it.

Large rifle magnum primers are exceptionally hard to come by unless you grit your teeth and pay rapist prices. I did that, counting shipping, $128 for 500.

I called Hodgdon's tech line a few minutes ago and was told that I could use large rifle primers with CFE BLK even though their published data shows large rifle magnum primers.

If interested, check out the pressures with CFE BLK for the 500. Amazingly low pressures even at max load, all of which for 370gr HC, 400 gr Sierra JSP, and 440gr HC are compressed loads. Don

If I put 70 gr of FFG in a 45-70 case and compress it and use a 405 gr lead bullet I only get about 1200fps with my trapdoor carbine

I doubt you can get enough powder in a 500 case to even get 1000fps

Uh wrong powder. CFE BLK is not black powder

Don't feel bad, I thought the same from the name until I dove into the string in detail.

It works real good in my CZ527 7.63X39 for what that is worth.
