I want to change out the front Hi-Viz sight on my 5 inch 686 and change to either a patridge blade or a plain black ramp. What do I need to order from Brownell's to do this? I have at my disposal for a short time a drill press so I would like to finish this while I have the drill.

First I need to know what revision gun you have ie -3, -4 etc, or can you measure the height of the sight you have now?

Also, I need to know exactly what type of Hi-viz it is. Also , again the height would be a big plus. ie .250 or .300 tall.

Exactly what type is it:
Is it the type that pulls to the rear and lifts up and off the gun or is it a pinned sight?

Does the base of the sight look like this top picture. This is a pinned front sight.
If you have a pinned front sight you will need to drill a hole using a # 54 drill. I drill part way from both sides of the gun so I don't damage the exterior of the gun. Use thread lock tite if the pin is loose fitting as you push it in.

or does the base of the sight look like the lower picture? (this is the dove-tailed sight that pulls to the rear and lifts up and off the gun)

Because of the so many different types of sight combinations I want to help you get the correct height front post you need, so your gun hits like it does presently.

I don't know why I did not include that in the original post!! The gun is a 686-5 with a 5inch barrel. The Hi-Viz front sight is .260 high , has a base that is semi-circular ( like the gold bead sight you show) and is pinned in place.Thank you for your help !!!

This gold bead from S&W will work
Gold Bead Pinned Patridge Front Sight .250 High

SKU: 192420000 $52.48
if the link don't work here is the website Category - Sight Accessories=

The original front blade is part #898150000 .250 black ramp (50 yrds) black ramp

same as above in a red ramp part #899000000

patridge .250 tall part #898210000

patridge with gold bead part #192400000

patridge with gold dot part #898240000

patridge with white dot part #898260000

All the above are S&W parts
possibly use parts numbers and call brownells or check website for availabilty.

Use info from above post. Position sight on gun. Use #54 drill and drill from both sides. Then place pin. If loose fitting add drop of blue loctite.

One additional hint: use some sort of clamp to hold the blade firmly to the base while drilling to prevent any possible movement of the blade. A small machinist clamp is ideal......
