.500 S&W Magnum, 1st Outing

Well, yesterday was my first outing with the big .500! I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised that the recoil was not nearly what I expected.

Also, if you would try it with the break removed it will be 100% better as your body won't suffer from the air blast.
The muzzle break is probably only 10-15% effective....

I was so delighted in learning this I made a home-made plug for mine.

Sweet little plug there. I am actually going to sell my .500 8 3/8" revolver as I have a Lew Horton PC version coming but I am also working a deal to get a .460XVR which will be the 8 3/8" version with the slide in compensator. I wonder if it is worth replacing that one with a solid one? From what I understand the .460 isn't much more recoil than the .454 so I don't imagine it'd be an issue with recoil on it. Are you making those plugs to sell of just a one off for yourself?

I definitely agree on the recoil being straight back and not that much muzzle rise. For me though, I feel all of my S&W revolvers are that way, which I have always attributed to the grip. The .500 definitely lets you know it went off that's for sure. I don't feel that the recoil was enough that I wouldn't consider it for big game back up and quite frankly if I was shooting a charging bear I would feel better with some larger, heavier, faster bullets going towards him :)

Do you know anyone that could make one of these for the 460X? Maybe the 500 version would work.

S&W use to make the plug for the 460, but it was discontinued. I used this plug and modified it to work for the 500. I wrote a nice letter to S&W wishing to purchase more of these solid Comps with no luck.... Sadly this is a rare accessory.
