I'm been watching really nice boxed 547s on GB for some time, just to watch what prices are doing. It's my only unfired safe Queen. It is just occurring to me that every one has had the newer one piece box. I've never seen one with the two piece Bangor Punta box. My gun isn't pinned, but it has the older box. I was just curious if anyone knows what the rough cutoff was between the two boxes. My S/N is 16Dxxxx which puts it at 1982ish. Did the boxes change when they went to the new S/N range, three letter prefix?

According to page 54 of the 4th edition of the Standard Catalog of S&W, the blue "Bangor Punta" two piece boxes (late ones might be marked Lear Siegler) were in use from 1966-1985, and the blue one-piece cardboard boxes were used from 1983-1997.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I'm more interested in 547 specifics from owners, according to the 3rd edition my gun should have a pinned barrel, that book ain't gospel.

I have a 4 " model 547 that has the pinned barrel and the patent number on the barrel. It came in the one piece Bangor Punta box that the owner said was original but he said the label fell off years ago so I don't really know if it's original.

That interesting, dose your s/n start with xxD prefix or a three letter prefix, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi all from Italy
If it can help, I have this 547 3", unpinned, round butt, serial 16Dxxx. (1982?) I bought it years ago I do not remember at what price! Unfortunately it did not have the box. I'll send you some photos, even with the Italian proof,

In my data base I have 8Dxxxxx-9Dxxxxx numbers being shipped in late 1981-1982. 16Dxxxx-19Dxxxx were in 1983-1984. Then the numbers shift to the ABKxxxx series. I have seen two pieces boxes used in the early 1980s on other models but they always had a printer generated label, not hand written. OP, is your label hand written? if it is I would be very specious of it being original!
Here is a tidbit I have found on the manufacturing numbers!
Date per year serial #
1979 1 3D67260
1980 140 5D59000-5D59139
1981 11 unkown
1982 0
1983 6486 unkown
1984 3460 unkown
1985 178 unkown
1986 3 unkown

Total production 10279
