Since I've been unemployed I've looked for creative ways to occupy my time between resume submissions. Today I was poking around in the kitchen and found about 3 pounds of potatos that had sprouted and were a little soft so I went to the front porch and tossed them down toward the creek. After the roll they ended up about 40 to 45 yards away and immediately started to look like targets. I pulled out my trusty 1956 vintage Remington 550-1 .22 and had a ball. That thing is scary accurate with open sights. Anybody else look at strange things and see shooting opportunities? Anybody else have a 550-1 that you like?

Pay attention to the drive home in the afternoon -- it's a whole new opportunity of targets. Proactive Driver's Education: Loaded cement truck with 12" C-channel front bumper. "Officer I never felt a thing."

remington 550

I have a remington 550 that my dad gave me when I was 12. I'm now 53 and still enjoy that rifle and the memories it holds.
Mine has the small tube scope that is mounted on the side of the receiver so you can still use open sights.
I don't see many for sale at gun shows anymore either.

Here are my two

Here is a picture of my two 550-1's. I just picked up the top one for $150 at a local gun show. They both are great shooters and will feed any .22 short, long, or long rifle. Great rifles made of wood & steel.

Cheez-its make very good targets: @ 100yds for scoped 22's and 200 for varment center fires.
When you and your friends get used to it the game becomes hunting down the pieces. I once shot one edgewise at 200, very satisfying!

Yes I have a 550 with a scope like vic3620 mentions. I got the gun new when I was 16, a long time ago. Can't tell how many rounds went through the gun. It was stored for 40 years until recently when I again got interested in target shooting. The iron sights are deadly accurate as you said and I now have the scope zeroed in. You can shoot just about any type or kind of ammo in it with on jams. A great little gun.

A 550-1 was my first real gun over 50 years ago. I love them.

I bought the last one a local dealer had when they quit making them. I gave it to my son a few years ago. Maybe grandson will wear it out. I think they are the best .22 autoloading rifle ever made. Larry

The strangest thing I ever shot was a shop vac that had died on me in the middle of a project. Took it out this past summer and let out some frustration with my 5906. I'm surrently looking for new targets for this summer, hoping to see some other good ideas. :)

My dad had a 550-1 when I was a kid. He taught me how to shoot, and more importantly, firearms safety with that wonderful rifle. Sadly, he traded it away many years ago. I'd really love to find a nice one.

I've never had a Rem 550 but my first firearm was it's offspring.........a Rem 552 that my dad gave me when I was 10. I still have and use it on occasion.

Anyone got any GOOD photos of the M-552? I'm sort of thinking of getting one. How well do they shoot, and will they feed all lengths of .22 ammo? Probably doesn't really matter, as I use only Long Rifles...unless a store has only Shorts. I can't recall seeing seeing any Longs lately.

Does the M-552 feed reliably? Is there anything to dislike about one?
