Help me choose which S&W 1911

178047 Pro Series, MSRP: $1,519, adjustable rear target sight (#1 contender)

My #1 choice also. I just with S&W would actually produce some.

Saw the round butt two tone a month ago at my LGS, was drooling all over it. Got on the waiting list and it came in today. Wow, what a gun. Off to the range tomorrow. I also looked at the new Remington, but the slide is not SS, just steel. Looks nice, but does not feel anywhere as good as the S&W.

I've had the 108284 for three years as one of my primary target pistols and it has been superb, very accurate, and no gun related failures. It's less expensive than some of your other stated options, at $800-900, but it has all the necessary bells and whistles.

My other range only 1911 is a Colt 1991A1 in 9mm with target sights. I like them both, but the Smith is my favorite.

As to the comment by another poster regarding external extractors, S&W figured that detail out 50 years ago. I've never had an extractor problem on any Smith semi-auto.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the comments. At the very least, I have decided that if I'm going to get a 1911, I might as well go the 45 route rather than the 9mm route. So that bumps my #1 contender out and #2 goes to the top of the list.

It's just frustrating as all get out not to be able to find these in any LGS.

I have read in other threads that Smith has been dedicating most of its production to a couple of large LE orders which are finishing up...the civilian gun orders should be getting more attention soon. I can't say how much truth is in this but it sounds good! I, for one, am glad to see an American gun maker getting more of the American LE contracts.

I have the Target model 108284. Love it so far.
+1 on that-I got the target model because it had the ambi safty as I am a lefty. I would rather have had the fixed sight, but I wanted the ambidexterous safety and it only came woth adjustable sights. This gun has everything one needs and nothing one doesn't.
