I,m new to the forum, any guess to the age and value of 581-2 blued, serial number 79xxx. Thank you, I did find the Serial Number under the rubber grips, it is BAD26XX, the number stamped under the grip, but not on the butt end and in the I guess cradle, is that 796XX.

Welcome Oklie and that is not the sn. you have posted. It was probably made in the late 80's or early 90's but that is hard to tell without the real sn. posted.

It should be inside the crane when you swing open the cylinder and begin with 3 letters then 4 numbers. Check again and post at least the 3 letters and a couple of numbers.

my 581-2 Serial Number does start with 79xxx and is a total of five digits. Thanks

It's on the butt. Three letters, then some numbers.

I do not know where you are getting the 79xxx number but it is NOT the serial number. By that time it would definitely have a 3-letter beginning on the serial number. If the revolver has target grips or other types covering the butt of the gun, you will not be able to find the sn. without taking off the grips. It should also be in the crane of the gun but who knows why you cannot find it.

Anyway, 581-2 models were made starting 1987 and by 1988 581-3 models were made and then the model line was dropped, also in 1988. All this came from info in the 3rd edition of the SCSW, by the way. That should help you.

Likely the first few months of 1988. AYM was January and BBF was July 1988, so closer to February than June.

Much depends on the local market, condition ect. But probably between $400.00 - $500.00. That's just a ballpark figure of course.

Without box and papers, if it's in 90% + shape, $300 to $400 is what I would put the value at. At least, that where I would start.

The model 581 is a very good revolver. Nothing fancy, but very good.
