586-1 mod

Ok, just picked up a 586-1 without the s&w mod. can i send it to s&w for the recall work? also just what is the recall work? and i will probably get it reblued as well. anybody know if the recall work will be warrantied? (not the "original" owner). $275...good price? Rebluing because of some slight surface rust on top of barrel and under trigger guard also some holster wear at front of barrel.

The "M" modification consists of replacement of the hammer nose and hammer nose bushing. It has nothing to do with warranty work, it is a recall to correct a design defect. They will do the work as long as parts are available.

I sent one back about a year ago and they paid shipping and did the recall work at no cost and I had just bought the gun. I would not have bothered to send it back except, like you, I wanted other work done at the factory and the recall got it a free ride. I have a number of no dash and dash 1s that have not had the modification done and have never had any trouble with any of them.

I sent my 586 back to S-W this past Monday. I bought mine used and later heard about the recall. I called S-W customer service and was told that my serial # fell in the recall range, but as old as it was and as much as it had been shot (I hadn't figured out how they knew how much it had been shot) that if anything was going to happen, it would have happened by now. I told Joe, the guy I talked to at S-W, if he would put what he told me in writing I would be happy to just keep it and not send it back. Joe ask for my name and mailing address and said S-W would be sending me a prepaid shipping label for Fedex and instructions on how to ship it. Now I am waiting to see how long it takes and if I get it back. S-W does not pay for insurance and Fedex won't allow you to purchase insurance. Fedex insures for $100.00. I also went by Fedex and they gave me a shipping carton. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Some of this is subjective thought/without any verification based on what the FP looked like before and after the work done by S&W.
The original FP looked rater long to me in the beginning.
Originally the gun was new to me--A 586 no dash--in very good condition. I really don't think it was shot much if at all. This was just a few months ago--I don't recall the time--spring of 2011.
I digress--I read of the recall and the symptoms which were the cause of the recall.
Because of the look of the FP--long with a pronounced hook to the FP--compared to other Smiths I own--I decided to send it back. I had shot it some, but not what I would call a lot.
The FP is now noticebly shorter, with less hook.
I am happy with the work.
I would also let Smith do the blueing.

I sent my 6" 586 no dash back the S&W last Jan for the recall work. Not so much for the fix but to get free shipping and have it re-barreled and refinished with the shipping on their dime. Mine too had a lot of finish wear a few scratches and some minor pitting, so instead of having them try to polish out the defects, I had them bead blast and blue it. Total time was about 8 weeks, with a total cost of $220 for the re-barrel with a "4 barrel I supplied, and the refinish.

Very cool. I don't normally like the bead-blast blue finish, but it looks very nice on your 586.

Just sent my 686-1 back about two weeks ago and picked it up at Fed Ex today. Quick turn around on their dime and now have the "M" above the model number. I wasn't having trouble with +P's but some stout .357's caused a bit of an issue so back it went. Will get it back to the range soon to give it a go. Nice that Smith will honor these recalls basically forever.
