Three weeks ago I was at the LGS picking up another revolver that I ordered. While I was waiting to to be helped. I spied this in the used revolver display.

I am still new to S&W model variations and I honestly thought at first glace that it was a Model 19 2.5 which I have wanting to find. After checking the action, lockup, bluing, and overall condition I knew I had to have it, so I added it to my overall purchase. No box or papers which is unfortunate. I cleaned it up (it didn't need much) and fired a few rounds through it (38s and 357) and found it to be very smooth. Over all condition would IMO a 85-90 with a couple dings on the cylinder.

Would anyone be willing to give me a little more info on it? As much as I dig going through the SCoSW there is not info about this run of revolvers. Did it come with the current Hogue, Pachs or wood from S&W? Any knowledge of how many were made? It is a 586-4. Serial number BSA30XX. Thank you!

It is an uncommon 586-4 in this barrel length and came with the Hogue Monogrip as pictured. If you got it for anything less than three figures it was a steal. Enjoy!

Thanks about the info about the grips. In your opinion, should I put a set of Altmonts on it or keep it stock/OEM?

They are easily swapped, so keep the originals and put on whatever suits you. It would look nice with a set of K/L RB wood Combat stocks.

It's a product code 103495. According to a Jinks letter posted earlier, 200 were made in this s/n range for RSR in 1994. This particular batch shipped with a wood grip, but I didn't record which type.

I know from studying these, there were other small runs of 103495 -4's made at other times with different s/n ranges. Some with Hogues. So, 200 isn't the overall total for -4's.

A similar 3-inch -4 gun was made for the French Police during the same general period.

Ahhh... That gun is no good. I'll buy it though. Very nice find!

Had one of those decades ago...... in my "only a handful of guns days"....

nice gun but too heavy to concealed carry vs a 3" 66 and open carry I just/always opted for a 4" 686.........sooooo

IIRC; I traded it off even up for "used"/but unfired PC Shorty 9.

Oh well shoulda, coulda, woulda.....

Thanks for the information and the kind responses. I think people would be horrifically surprised what I picked this gem up for. Hint it was way less than $1k. Right place at the right time, I suppose.

Good for you. They didn't know what they had. I paid $1200 for mine in the box several years ago and was happy to do it.

Lucky for us all LGS are not full of collectors....... most just see them as guns to buy low and sell higher!!!!!!

I never knew the rarity or value of this gun!

I never knew the rarity or value of this gun! I have owned one for some time and preferred to own a stainless one. This thread made me realize I can sell mine and buy the stainless version. After seeing the GBroker auction of one in Jan, I realized I should be able to buy one AND a .22 cal to match!
This was SUCH good news to see!
Thanks for the info!
Robert
