Slight rant, slight sob story, this one.

In the local web classifieds a beautiful if badly photographed 686 snub showed up today, and some quick guesswork from the few details visible (in another photo w/private info I'll keep private) confirmed it as a late-ish -4 model with 2.5" barrel. The shocker - listed at $550!

I immediately contacted the seller, the ad having just gone live (I was shown as 3rd visitor to the page), the seller confirmed condition, confirmed we were good for a deal at $550, to which I told them we could talk it over if they had any issues with that once we met in person, IE I'd go higher if necessary. They said they'd get back to me asap after the finished at work, but as far as they were concerned we were on for a deal.

At 7:05 the ad dissapeared, so I messaged them to ask if it was sold. After a lot of hemming and hawwing it came down to 'so and so got ahold of me and told me how much they'd go so I just went with that, sorry, you just missed it.'

When asked why they'd not even extended a chance to match that offer - or frankly, go higher, as I might've - they 'forgot who was first'.

It sold w/case and speedloader for all of...700.

That’s a bad deal - wonder what “so and so” paid. Hopefully the seller gets a taste of his own medicine in the future.
On the bright side the 686-4 snub is not rare and I’m sure you can snag another. Just probably won’t be at that price. I paid more for mine 3 years ago and I had to replace the hammer and trigger that bubba had worked on. After the gunsmith tuned and bead blasted it’s perfect for me. I finally found the right grips for it as the combats it came with don’t work for me.

Ugh, what a kick in the pants. Unfortunately like Yogi Berra said “it ain’t over, till it’s over”.

That was a good deal. The only reason I would seek out a dash 4 is if it were a seven shot. I snagged this -3 at an LGS a few years back for $499. I don't know why it was marked as such. Original combats were missing. I then used the savings to treat it and myself to the Culina French walnut combats.

Yeah, you got the short end, but….

The chance of that kind of deal in my are is ZERO!

But if it did, It would become my whole world to get over to the seller faster than asap. I simply would leave nothing to chance.

When I’m selling something, there is one rule. He who puts cash in my hand first buys item.

Talk is cheap. Results are the only thing that matter.

That was the most infuriating part - I had cash in hand, said so, and they asked if they could get back to me after work - my own fault for trusting a non-collector...

Also, as per the short chat I had with the seller (and in line for it being a late-prod -4) - it was a 7-shot.

I had a similar situation last December but it came out in my favor. A 686-3 4" midnight stainless got posted for $550 and I called immediately. We agreed to meet and he pulled the ad. Next day the ad was back up so I txt to confirm meet time and place. When we finally met up he said he wasn't sure about my level of interest. I did get it so now I have both a 6" and a 4".

That’s a real jerky move by the seller. Especially since you acknowledged you would/could pay more…… I once stood in a sellers driveway looking at a WAY underpriced Honda Big Red 250. I said I’ll take it just as a gun pulls into driveway. Seller says let’s see what he’ll offer and a third guy is also coming. Second guy offers a lot more than advertised. I said thanks for wasting my time. It’s a 45 min ride to get here. I’m not getting in a bidding war. Told second guy to move his truck so I could leave. As I’m leaving third guy showed up and didn’t even get out. I know for a fact he drove an hour to get there. Lots of jerks in the world
