Many decades ago I owned a really nice early Model 39 S&W, in the original box with papers. But I went stupid thinking I really didn't need another 9mm, so I sold it, and immediately had seller's remorse.
Since that time I've always kept an eye out for a 39, but they just kept going higher and higher for nice ones over the decades! Then last week I was asked by a mutual friend to go look at his friend's reloading supplies with the thought of buying them. As I walked into the gun room I noticed a glass front large rifle case and sitting on a shelf up high was what looked like a Model 39!
I didn't want to immediately go crazy, and change direction so I kept my focus on the reloading equipment and supplies. But once we'd done that I asked the son if I could look at the handgun on the shelf and he said sure. After unlocking the cabinet I grabbed the handgun and immediately knew my guess was confirmed; it was a almost like new S&W 39-2! Tough to conceal my excitement, and I likely didn't. I asked what his plans were for the firearms, and he said he'd been taking them 4-5 at a time to a local gun shop, and was happy with their prices. I told him if the 39 was going there, I was going to follow him over and try to buy it as soon as he was done selling it!
He stopped for a moment and asked me what I'd sold my previous Model 39 for, and I told him $300, but that was probably 30 years ago! He then told me if I wanted to give him the same it was more than the gun store offered and it could be mine! I quickly grabbed my wallet and paid him!

It feels like reconnecting with an old friend after decades apart, and the 39 has always just fit me like a glove. I own a model 59 I've always loved, but it's just a little different grip feel, and I love it also, but not quite like the 39. I took it all apart, and internally it appears as new as the outside is!
Haven't had this to the range yet, but hoping it's as accurate as my old 39 was!

Nice pistol. The price is ludicrous. It quite obviously opens up the question of... what else is he selling, what has he already sold to that store and who/how/why did he ever get the idea that he was happy with what they have been offering him?

We all know how stores and dealers work and frankly how they NEED to work to survive. This isn't personal on any level. But he's peeing money straight in to the wind and seemingly has no idea that he is doing so.

Unfortunately that question did come up as myself and another asked how he decided their prices were "good"? He told me he took in 5 guns and got $1700 for them, d I was looking at the gun cabinet when he said that and saw a few Ruger #1 rifles with Leupold scopes on them. I asked if any of those 5 were another Ruger #1 like those, and he said one was.
I told him that most gun stores want to make 50% on a gun they buy, and just one of those #1's with a nice Leupold scope was an easy $1500 used. So even at 2/3 prices it was a $1000 from an honest gun shop easily. So he got $700 for 4 more guns of unknown value.
He then took me outside to his SUV and opened the back to show me 8 more guns headed to the gun store. Two more Ruger #1's, and one in .22-250 with heavy varmint barrel, and a Leupold large objective varmint scope! I told him that rifle would sell easily for $2500 and he should get the same $1700 for it alone. Went over the other 7 and told him what to expect for them. Not sure how he did, but heading over there today to pick up all the ammo and reloading supplies, and will ask how they did for him?
There's one more handgun I'd be mildly interested in, and it's a modern Colt of either series 70 or 80 style in .45ACP. Like new also, but I have three so it would need to be another bargain to buy it.

Went back today to buy all the ammo, reloading supplies, powder, primes, etc., and all the rest of the guns were gone. Owner's son had taken them all to the LGS, so that's the end. Glad I got the 39!
I bought enough ammo and reloading to completely fill my old '69 Suburban in the entire back, the rear seat area, and the passenger seat up front with ammo, powder, primers, loading equipment, bamboo fly rods, reels, sporting goods, etc., etc.
My poor truck came home with no springs left under the rear.

Come on now...tell us for real

With all those old Rugers in old calibers you must have come away with some factory boxes of 32-20 WCF.:D

Around here no LGS will purchase any ammo from private people, but they will gladly give you 10-20% of what any gun is worth that you bring in, and that is after they pull out the "Blue Book" and show you ancient pricing.

Since you're going to need new springs for your truck, any chance you're putting any of that great stuff you got for sale?:)

I would say ya did very well at that price indeed seeing they went for $125 back in 1974. At least that is what I paid for a new one!

Nothing in neat old calibers like .32-20 in there. He had a Colt SAA in .22LR/.22Magnum, in the box with papers, but not the casehardened steel frame. One of the blued alloy frames. Still a fairly valuable gun I'd estimate around $450 maybe? Another Ruger single six, and a Ruger blackhawk in .357 Magnum.
I found some beautiful highly tooled leather holsters that were Western style, and were Lawrence Leather made! Lawrence was a local company and did some very high grade custom work back then. One Lawrence is a double holster setup in black tooled leather aand loops look like .38/.357 size. The other is a single black with belt, and the last a nice tooled brown holster for a Super Blackhawk, no belt.
I saw no Orvis fly rods, but lots of other names and they were all USA made. A couple made in New York state. A couple marked Pearl, but no markings other than that. The wooden cases all have sliding lids inside that hold flies, and leaders, etc. and most are full. Some rods are 3 piece, and some 5 piece! All like new condition, and used price tags in the box around $50 from some past purchase?
I upgraded some things to my loading bench as I've used an RCBS 505 scale for many decades, and I replaced it with the 10-10 scale. And of course all the primers will go in my stock. Have a box of sheath kinves that are various makers like CaseXX, Schrade, Western, and no name knives, plus a few folding knives.
Going to provide my family and friends with all the 12 ga. they'll ever want at $2 a box, just to lighten my load! Trying to make sure any pistol or rifle ammo goes to friends and family also. Then sell whatever is leftover, as I'm not in this to make a profit. I did discover 3 spotting scopes in plastic toolboxes, and gave a Burris to my son in law for helping. One is a Swarovski 20x-60x, and it's staying here to replace my old Kowa that I'll let my nephew have cheap. He needs a good spotting scope. The 3rd is a decent Bushnell, but not highly valued. Maybe a $40-$50 scope used with tripod.
I just want to get this stuff out of my truck without moving it more than once more!

You did good! And living right.
I have several 39-2's, all great shooters. Wonderful triggers a real pleasure to shoot. But one nickel 39-2 is extra special. Just special in every way. However, it's unfair to compare today's to yesterday's price. But three hundred dollars?

I put my new to me 39-2 next to my Model 59, and they are extremely similar. Just the humped back to the 39 grip, and single stack mag. Slides and sights appear identical. Both very comfortable, and with equally nice triggers. Just a little different feel to their grips.

Makes sense since the Model 59 was based on the Model 39. Only real difference was the double stack vs the single stack.

I've not yet checked the 59 vs. 39 I own to see how they compare date wise? Need to see if my 59 is older or newer. The 59 is a nice gun, but not as close to perfect as the 39, as I used to carry it a lot, so more holster wear.
