586 4" question

In the near future....I will be looking to trade for a 586 4" with a hammer nose to be used in competition. Any red ramp front sight will be machined off and a post will be installed.

No need for target width hammer or trigger and would prefer a smooth trigger.

Is there a certain revision that is preferred?

I know the original 686s required mods from the factory and got an M stamp indicating the work was done. Just wondering if 586s were in the same boat.

I believe the early no dash 586's were included in the recall also. Others will straigten it out if I'm wrong.

Yes...both the no dash and dash-1 586, 686, 581, and 681 all had the potential hammer issue and were recalled. Many owners have debated how critical it really is but those were the models. If recall work was done there will be an "M" stamp by the serial number.

Sorry, but must clarify. The M stamp is supposed to be right above the serial number in the yoke cut.

Some folks prefer the -4 revision as being the "best" of the L frames. This includes all the improvements without MIM parts, if i remember correctly. Personally, I think all the l frames are pretty solid. Unless you are shooting a lot of hot 125 grain loads, the M revision is probably not even needed. My early 586 has many thousands of rounds through it and it is just as good as the day I brought it home. I have handled several 686's that have the lock and they all seemed like pretty good guns too. My advice would be to find one that has good timing, locks up tight and looks new and you will be well served.
