6 inch 586 no dash blued for $580 in local shop

Looks black the bluing is so deep (I guess). In good condition, not excellent, has been used. Some muzzle wear. Trigger smooth in DA and very light in SA. Lock up is tight. It has adjustable rear sight with red front ramp insert. It has black rubber grips – are these original to the gun? I "peeled" back the top side of the grip and it said Smith & Wesson Square Butt imprinted on the grip.

It does not have the "M" imprinted on the crane so it has not been sent back to the factory for recall/modification.

Good price or not? Am thinking it is fair to slightly high but wanted to check with you experts! :)

I bought a 4 inch nickel 586 from same place over a year ago for same price. It had the original wooden coke bottle grips. Wondering if this might keep it company.

That sounds a little high. I just noticed one sell at a auction locally in the box that looked like new for 550.00.
I would say 450.00 or so would be a good price.

But, if you really want it, I guess it is worth the price.:D

I'm no expert but...

$580 if that's OTD that's better then a fair deal 'round here

double check the 1st one you bought. original "coke" grips are by themselves worth hundreds and I doubt they would have been placed on the 586.

going back to the question, $580 sounds kinda high. Of course, it depends on where you live. Maybe the seller allowed for some haggling room.

Also, I'm not too keen on the rubber grips being original to a no dash model.

Good luck!

Ed

Thanks, Ed.

Maybe I don't know what coke grips are. What I call coke grips are the original wooden grips that look like the bottom of a coke bottle.

Please clarify -- are you saying rubber grips were NOT original to the no dash blued 586 model?

I just bought one this week from a shop in Reno. Mod. 586 no dash, excellent appearance & mechanical condition (tight lock-up, good timing, no visible cutting of the strap or back plate, etc), only sign of wear is the turn line on the cylinder, it's obviously been a safe queen with a couple boxes through it. Nice, custom finger-grove wood grips but missing the factory originals. $475 + tax & NICS = $535 out the door.

I checked with the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (3rd ed) and it listed the 586-4 with the synthetic grips (Page 249).

It also mentioned on Page 248 that "checkered target Goncalo Alves stocks with S & W medallions and speedloader cutouts...." I guess they meant that was the original grips when the 586's were first introduced in 1980.

maybe someone else can chime in w/ regard to the grips of the 1st one you bought.

regards,

Ed

I would paid $475 plus fees tops. I saw a shooters grade with original grips for $475. Personally, since it is unmodified I would not buy the revolver unless it was unfired with box and papers and then I may go $525.
As much as I like L frame revolvers when you get into the $575 to $625 I would rather have a N frame. I was a fool and missed out on a 27-2 4 inch Nickel for $475. I have bad dreams everynight now thinking about I should of bought the revolver on the spot instead of waiting until the next day. I wanted to bring cash to buy it. I should of used a credit card and bought first time I saw it.
Anyway, good luck.

Guys, you are providing excellent information -- much appreciated!! $580 seems high based on what you guys are seeing out there, and given that it does not have the original grips, I think I am going to pass on it. THANK YOU!

All depends on your perspective. If you are a buyer, it seems a little high. On the other hand, I wouldn't sell my 586 for that!

Seriously, it does seem about $100 over what they would bring in East Tennessee, but I haven't bought one in sometime either, so I may be the one that is off.

I just looked at one at my LGS with lots of blue wear but mechanically OK was marked $400.00 They would have let go for $400.00 OTD that includes $25.00 BGC + 8.1% Sales tax.

Buddy sent me this info out of the book. I'd say it was right around 95%, maybe a bit higher. Seems way over priced based on the book.

100 per-650, 98 per-550, 95 per- 450, 90 per-375.

I can tell you that beat to tar 686's go for $500 to $550 depending on how beat they are. I have never even seen a blued steel 586 and have yet to see in front of me a 581 or 681. North Florida seems to have S&W collector fever and people here pay more than they should for anything in any condition usually. I should include myself in that statement only because I snapped up my 28 since I keep seeing prices jump here and didn't want to eventually pay even more than I did. I go to gun shows where I see Combat Masterpieces and Combat Magnums go for $600 to over $1K depending on condition. Sure, some of them set a while but they go home with someone eventually. It seems someone has to die for them to go up for sale here. Add in if it has current mass appeal features like a four or three inch barrel, original grips, box, paperwork, sight adjustment tool, or whatever and the price just keeps jumping. So at this point my view is if you see it, you want it, and you have the money for it, then you should buy it.

Cokes??????

I thought that original coke bottle grips were issued on N frame SW issued during the 50's and 60's. Never heard of cokes on a L frame.

$580.00 sounds a little high, unless it is A.N.I.B. But keep in mind they are not making any more of them and the prices on good condition examples are not getting any cheaper.
