Took in a show today, and saw a 586 4" barrel. Nickel plated, in great shape. Virtually no wear indicated on muzzle, cone, or cylinders. Timing, lockup, etc was beautiful. Square butt frame with wood grips.

I was really looking for a 686 (couldn't find one) but asked anyway and just about choked - the guy wanted $680. They're not made anymore, I understand, but that seems way-overpriced, but did I miss something? Wondering if I made a mistake.

Appreciate any help or insight. Thanks!

Hello and welcome here,

The price seems about $150.00 high around here but you did not state the "dash" number or if it had the original box, documents, tools etc. It could be that it was high but appropriately priced with all these things.

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry, failed to mention it was a no-dash. There were no other accessories, box, etc. that were included.

Thanks again. The search for a 686 will continue!

My local shop has a 586-1 Nickel 4" that is clean. Asking Tag Price is $595. My guess is a stack of Green would bring it down to $550.

I also think it's over priced as I think it should sell for $550 to $600 tops for one in that condition.

Thanks for those references, BobR1 and fyimo. I was really searching for a 686, but the 586 was the closest thing I could find yesterday. I'm a newbie, by the way.

Yesterday's show was a relatively small one (maybe 75 or 80 tables?), but there is a much bigger one in 2 weeks in Puyallup (Wa State), and I figure I will probably run into the guy again, there. Probably with the same gun in front of him.

And if I still can't find a 686 at that show, maybe I'll take a run at him and see if that "stack of green" can talk some price sense into him and go ahead and buy a 586, too.

After all, you can't have too many Smiths, can you?

Thanks again.

You might consider putting a WTB ad here on the forum for a 686. State desired price range and specify condition and bbl length.

I just got a no dash 586 with no box or papers in 6". Looks to be unfired. Close inspection after it arrived revealed a booker on the side of the barrel that is driving me nuts but the rest of the gun is absolutely pristine. I gave $550 worth of trade plus about $75 worth of shipping and transfer.

I didn't do too well in my opinion but I don't see alot of 6ers in nickel.

Try for $500-$550 OTB on the 586.
