A fellow is trying to trade me a 586 no dash Silhouette. I believe it's a 8 3/8" barrel. He's saying his trade value is $1,200 which seems a bit high to me. He has the box, but I believe that's it. It in the high 90's percent wise. Any help with current market value on these would be appreciated. He wants my gun, but is short on cash. I'd rather have cash, but I'm not sure what his gun would actually bring on the market.

Let me get this straight, a person has a 586 "Silhouette" with an 8.375" barrel that is about 90%, and presumably used, and wants $1200? I would presume by the reference as "Silhouette", that it has the 4 position adjustable front sight (AFS)? I am probably wrong, but I never knew that the 586 was offered with the loong barrel. Granted it was long ago, but my 8.375" Model 27 was purchased for $350.

All things being considered and authentic, the most that I would give for this handgun would be $600, but I am cheap!

Yes, the "Silhouette" refers to the adjustable front sight. The 586 was offered in an 8 3/8" barrel for sure. The Standard Catalog lists that particular gun as product code 103528 made in 1986.

..that is about 90%, and presumably used
I wrote "high 90's". Grading is subjective, but I'd say perhaps 98%.

I thought the price was out of line but didn't know how much premium that particular model may bring. I'm gather that it must be very little to none. It does seem to be a fairly rare model however.

Recently sold a 586 6" Barrel (think it was a -3) with adjustable front sight (Silhouette) at local show for $750.00, no box. I believe the 586's are not seen as much as the 686 Silhouette's. Haven't seen a 586 with 8 3/8" though. A no dash may be more uncommon. IMO, if you are looking to resale this trade, you will probably tie up your money waiting to sell for $800 to a buyer that is wanting to buy this long barrel Silhouette. By searching internet the pictured 586 long barrel without box offered at $1129 and was reduced to $999 showing as "Sold". This was in 2011. Hope this helps with decision. Here is link:

I bought this 686 no dash, no M about 2 months ago for 300 bucks at a pawn shop.
It is not a representative price of the model in general because it had a serious push off problem that I had to repair.
The 686 was dangerous in the condition I bought it and the shop owner just wanted rid of it.

I just looked at one at a w.Va gun show, just gun no box
Or papers wanted $850 for it. 95% or better after I looked
At it he said he could come down if no trade was involved.
I did not make offer, was afraid I would own it.

Sounds like that price is too high, I'm thinking more in the 800 range.

A S&W 586 no dash with front silhouette sight and a 8 3/8" barrel in about 97% condition just sold this past weekend on GB for $1004.00 without box. Some people like them.

I'm one of those "some people" who like them.

I've had an 8 3/8" 586 for several years. I shoot silhouette with it and it is incredibly accurate. I couldn't be happier with my model. The long sight radius really pays off out at 100 yards plus. Great trigger !

$1200 may be a little high. The $1000 price is probably more likely to sell quickly. Whatever the price, this is a superb shooting iron from S&W. I like the bluing of the 586 better than the stainless 686.

It is one of my favorites.

Prescut
You do realize "trade value" is always higher by 10 to 20 % ? or your gun is lower by that much?

I like the 586 as much as anyone, but I would have to say "No Deal" to that offer.

I tend to give much more worth to the -4 and older S&W revolvers because they were hand fitted and better overall guns. And when they are somewhat rare like the Silhouette, I would pay a premium for a gun like that with a box. i am selling a 629-4 in excellent to like new condition for $950. I wont budge. There are few revolvers on the planet like it. They don't make them like this anymore. I don't mind keeping it . it's just that it just seta in the safe. I shoot it once a year or so and it puts a big smile on my face. Then I clean it and put it back in the safe. But if I get the ca$h for it, I'll let it go.
