Found this super clean specimen at my LGS this morning. Priced reasonable, so it left with me. SN- ADM99xx (1984 mfg?)

No M stamping, so no hammer bushing mod. Can anyone advise what brand ammo it was that made the mod necessary?

Pic or it didn't happen, right?

Model 586, 686, 581, etc. L-Frame Recall

Federal .357 ammo, with "soft" primers, and bullet weights in the 110 to 125 gr range, and "fast burning" powder. After reading all I could find, I decided to NOT do the upgrade on mine. Yes, I DO shoot .357 full loads in mine, although only 158 gr (until I run out of old amo anyway).

581 no dash recall upgrade

Good article, long but with some useful information beyond just the recall:

For anyone else, the second and third pics show where the M stamp would go on a gun that had the recall done.

No M stamping, so no hammer bushing mod.

The cartridge issue only affected the No Dash and Dash 1 L frame handguns. S&W changed the hammer nose and bushing for -2 and higher manufacture. The M was only necessary for the earlier guns.

Agree with bananaman.

I have a 6" 586 which I bought for the sole purpose of paper punching. It has received quite a bit of customization to this end. I don't think I have ever even fired any round nose .38s through it, just wadcutters.

For my use I have no need for the modification, so I never had it done.

Despite its limited scope of use (it is quite heavy/bulky now) it is my favorite S&W revolver. From the initial introduction of the L frames I have always thought them to be the ideal size/configuration .357 S&W revolver.

Your intended use should help you determine whether or not you need the modification.

My first year 586 was carried as a duty gun. Lots of Remington 125 grain mags (duty issue), as well as a bunch of various .357 and .38 spl handloads of various grain weights with no issues.

I have also heard Federal factory ammo could be an issue, and I don't recall using such in my gun, but I have used a lot of Federal primers in magnum reloads in that gun with no issues. Never did send it back for the update as by the time I had learned of the "issue", I had thousands of problem free rounds thru it, and was transitioning to the Beretta 92 anyway.

If the gun will be used for SD, I would test my carry ammo first, and if in any doubt, send it back for repair.
