586 or 27??

I can only afford one. The 586 is in near-perfect condition, except that the rear sight is gone, has been replaced by a Bushnell red-dot. I don't know the condition of the mod. 27. Cost on both is in the same ballpark.

What would you choose, and why?

If the Model 27 was clean and P&R I buy it and save for a 586 later as there are lots of clean ones of the 586 out there.

Early 586 no dash's I thought had a recall on them. (not a big deal by the way) but something to keep in mind, or a possible bargaining point.

Oh, I'd go with the 27, especially if a 27-2. More details might help.

Unless the 27 has been run run over by a truck, go for it. They are a classic S&W with all the top quality old parts, fit, and finish.

It would be a range gun, and a better place to put my money than the stock market... I think of out as a savings account that I can play with.

If it's a range revolver and in VG condition no doubt on the 27. If it was for the field I'd go for the 586. Classiest (27) revolver to ever come across the S&W line IMO. Love my 3.5" 27-2. Don't shoot it much but love doing so and oogling over it after I've cleaned it up.

If you can't buy both, as a range toy my choice would be the 586. Expecially for club matches in which usually some sort of optic is used. I have both a 28-2 and a 681.
For DA shooting, I much prefer the faster/lighter L-Frame revolver.

The 27 is the real deal, fit finish old school quality.
I also have a 686. it is lazer accurate but the 27 wins for me if I had to pic one

The 27 is the "winner" for classic .357 quality and worth, however, I much prefer the handling and form factor of the 585. Get 'em both, if you can... you will never go wrong in doing so.

While the 27 is a wonderful gun indeed, to me, the 586 is among the most desirable S&W revolvers one can have. The feel in the hand, the handling, the looks... Just wow.

I have both, and while the 586/686 is a fine weapon, the 27/28/627 is just more of a classic S&W IMHO. I am not selling the 586 I own and I still shoot it often, but I never quite fell in love with the full under-lugged barrel. If it had the classic barrel I would probably go with the L frame instead of the N Frame M27.
