586 round butt

One of the local pawn shops is always on the lookout for guns that I might be interested in. So Tuesday I get a text from the owner notifying me of a 586 for sale. When time permitted I went to have a look. It was a 6" 586-3 well worn but mechanically solid. The price was Ok, but the revolver had a round butt on it. Just my opinion, but a RB on a gun with a 4" barrel or longer just doesn't look right to me. I passed on the gun even though I know I can get round butt to square butt grips. Is it unusual for an older 6" gun to have a round butt? The price would have to be very good for me to bite on that gun

In theory the only 586s with a RB grip frame would have been -4 or later. One clue to a gunsmith modification of an earlier one would have been the loss of the serrations on the rear grip strap.

I have a no-dash 586 6" that was clearly converted to a RB - the back strap is smooth and the SN on the butt is 'way off center (but thankfully intact). Whoever did the work did a great job of it, right down to the polishing and bluing. I'm not a big fan of RB guns, either, but the price was too good to pass up. I put a pair of Altamont conversion grips on it and we're both living happily ever after.

It had a pair of Hogue rubber grips on it that I pulled off to check to see if it had been converted. The serrations were intact and the serial number was centered. Maybe it was mismarked as a 586-3. It was definitely ugly but if priced at $300 or so I would have bought it and put conversion grips on it. It was priced considerably higher

You wouldn't happen to remember the serial#? Either starting with a BPD, BAS or a BRF ?

Could be a re - barrel. Only a letter would tell..

I believe it was in ‘89, that S&W released a limited run of 4” & 6” 586-3 had a round but with a matte finish.

Sorry, the 2.5” and 3” were -4.
