586 to S&W Performance Center

I recently acquired a Mod 586 (no dash) then put some rounds through it at two IDPA and one ICORE events and really enjoyed myself. This revolver has (on a couple occasions) experienced "cylinder binding", and after a little research found a thread with a comment that there is a S&W recall repair for this condition. One call to S&W was all it took for them to send me the shipping label so I can return it for the work.

I then inquired about custom work and was told that following the warranty repairs that this gun could be sent over to the Perf. Center for additional modifications. My goal is to have a light and smooth DA operation. I will be using 38 spl loads with Fed. 100 SP primers exclusively for comperition.

There isn't a lot of detail listing specific work done by Perf Center at the S&W site but I am planning to purchase the "Master Revolver Package" listed at $155 that includes:

*Trigger Stop
*Chamfer Charge Holes
*Polish Rebound Spring, Hammer Stud and Yoke Barrel Bosses
*Detail Lockwork Surfaces
*Stone Hammer and Trigger Contact Areas
*Test Fire for Function

Do any forum members have experience with the S&W Perf. Center? Have you ever seen a detailed list of Perf Center services?

Thanks for reply, been there and that's where I selected the service I want. I am looking for other services like have the hammer spur bobbed or fiber optic front sight installed. Maybe that's all they do but I'd think they would have a "cut sheet" detailing their services. I will call before I mail my piece in.

About that shipping label they sent you . Is it pre-paid and also what service, UPS or FedEx ?

I had some smithing done by them about ten years ago. I thought I wanted a "combat" model 29. I liked their work, and immediately sold it.
They chamfered the charge holes, added trigger overtravel stop, and bobbed the hammer, and round butted the frame. Cost me about $225 back then. Great work. I lost money on the gun.

I looked into this a few months ago. This is about the going price for the same type of work from a top gunsmith. Although, I believe any trigger lightening is done thru action smoothing & polishing as S&W won't use lighter than factory springs. Plus, if there is any premium to be paid at resale time, I believe folks would rather pay for a factory action job rather than by some gunsmith of any reputation.

The real advantage you get is in the shipping. If one is to do it properly, according to UPS or FEDEX requirements, it would cost at least $100 in round trip transit to a gunsmith of your choice. All in all, I'd say you're getting a bargain.

I had work done on two revolvers some years ago, a model 19 and a model 28. The work performed was for end and side shake/timing, general examination and repair as necessary. I also had both refinished with the black glass bead finish to produce a sleek combat type working look. The smith at the factory replaced a few parts from the exam, fixed the timing issues, refinished the guns and had them back within a month. I had excellent results.

I was advised by the Performance Center after they received the guns and made the exam about what was needed, approximate cost and permission to proceed, After letting them know I approved of the estimate, the work was done and the revolvers came back just lovely. Both have had their service lives extended and I am extremely pleased with the work. I will have any future work needed done by the factory. You should also be very happy if you send your gun to the Performance Center. The Performance Center does not seem to have a listing of services per se, aside from what they already list. It seems that one needs to call to ask specific questions about work to be done beyond what their general listing states. My only real gripe was that recently, I tried to call to ask about some work and got no answer on the phone.
That could have been due to the holiday and short staff and I will call back later in January. Otherwise, you should be happy with their work.

I shipped the revolver to PC over the holiday and its been received at their facility. Due to the holiday PC was closed for a week so I was not able to talk to anyone there. I will call them when they return to the shop this week to discuss the specifics of the work I want performed. As mentioned above, I never found a "list" of their various services so I will rely on our phone conversation to define it.

Hopefully in a few weeks I will report back on this thread to discuss the outcome of the work.

My 586 was returned to me on Feb 3rd and after a trip to the range followed by indoor dry-fire practice I can say that I am a satisfied customer.

I adjusted the windage screw to move the POI to the left a bit so it's ready for an IDPA event tomorrow morning. All rounds fired today were my reloads using Federal primers (soft) with all of them providing ignition.

What I liked:

• I had the hammer bobbed so I can achieve a high grip without spur interference. This feels very nice!
• The action was polished resulting in a smoother and lighter trigger pull with a very noticeable difference in the trigger return.
• I had already installed Wolf springs and when I sent my revolver to PC for the work, I included the stock springs with it along with a letter detailing what I wanted to use the revolver for. PC left the Wolf spring set installed.
• The cylinder charge holes were chamfered and this modification resulted in a noticeable improvement of reloading efficiency using speedloaders.
