I received a 5903 from a seller last week, and the trigger is behaving differently than any other pistol I've owned. I've owned CZ, Kahr, Sig, Beretta and Ruger semi-autos, but never a Smith semi, so I don't know what's 'normal' for these guns.

On to my question/issue: With the hammer cocked, there is about 5mm of loose trigger 'play' or take-up. As in, the trigger with flop back-and-forth with no spring tension on it at all. Then, there is another 9mm of smooth take-up before a crisp, medium/heavy-weight final pull before the hammer drops. Is this 5mm of 'floppiness' normal? If not, what could be causing this?

Thanks for any help/guidance!

Sounds like the trigger play spring is broken. This is the one weakest of Smith autos. Midway should have replacements for it. If you search for "trigger play spring", I know someone posted pics on what it looks like and how to fix it.

I am having similar problems with my 439. In fact, I posted under Gunsmithing "The double action pull on my 439 has virtually no slack to take up before it fires. Single action pull is between 1/2" and 3/4" before it engages the sear and fires." Got one reply to take it to a gunsmith, which I intend to do. Maybe I am having spring problems. Also, the trigger pull is about the same double or single action. I don't mean to hijack your post, I thought I would let you know I seem to be having similar problems.
