I'm wanting to replace the standard fixed sights on my 5906 but am having difficulty finding complete assemblies? Does anyone have recommendations or sources?

Just to clarify - are you wanting to replace the rear Novak or pre-Novak factory fixed sight with the "dog ear" or "winged" factory adjustable sight assembly? If so, you can't - the slide cuts are not the same. You will need to look for aftermarket replacements such as LPA or Millett.

You might search the auction sites like eBay and Gunbroker, sometimes you will find a 5906 slide with the factory adjustable sights. Otherwise, you will need to look for an LPA adjustable rear sight or, if you can find one, a Millet adjustable rear sight.

If you go for an aftermarket adjustable sight, remember there were two very different rear sight dovetails on the S&W 3rd gen pistols. Early production 3rd gen pistols, the ones with hooked trigger guard, usually have the 2nd gen style rear sight dovetail. Later production 3rd gen pistols have the slide cut for Novak rear sights.

Is there a way to tell the difference? Does S&W publish a spec table by SN? I'm new to pistol modifications and want to upgrade mine with some sort of adjustable sight system.

S&W does not give out this information, even if they have it. It's very easy to determine if your pistol has the early sight or the later Novak sight. The early sight is a simple dovetail and a simple, compact sight.

The Novak sight is much larger and has a wedge shaped profile.

Sorry to intrude on an old post, but I have a later model 3rd gen 5906. Anyone know if there's a picatinny rail which utilizes the novak dovetail as an anchor? Trying to see over a can on the 5906 just ain't possible with the current sights.

+1 on LPA

here is the "target" model on a M5906 TSW

here is the "compact" model on a M6904 slide (M5967 frankengun)

great sights...a bit soft, so do not drop them on the floor when installing them, because they get dinged. Also, they have a lot of extra "meat" so installation takes patience...

there are available in many places online. Do some research and you will find some. The .45/10mm model is different from the .40/9mm. A quick search on the forum will help you find the right model
