I just picked up 2 of the 5906 trade-ins from Summit. I think I got the last 2 so probably from the bottom of the box. They seem to be mechanically sound but do show LOTS of holster wear and scratches. Can they be polished at home? What would you recommend? ScotchBrite? Steel wool? Leavethem like they are?
Thanks in advance.

Congratulation!

My first inclination would be to shoot 'em as-is, since holster wear and scratches should have no effect on function. Makes 'em look, well, experienced!

Others will have recommendations for scratch removal and polish.

I always thought the 5906 was stainless all around? Correct me if I'm wrong please.

you are correct sir ,all ss is the 5906

After closer examination the wear really doesn't bother me. I put a few rounds through each one and they are great. I'm just gonna shoot 'em and clean 'em. I would like to explore grip possibilities as one has the grip chewed up at the right side de-cocking lever.

The green Scotch-Brite pads work wonders on the steel. I've done it to three of mine, now they all look new.

I picked up one of them from Summit too. Its got holster wear but the internals on mine look great. From what I've found grips are somewhat limited. You have Hogue wood grips, I've heard these are really thick. Hogue rubber grips are thick but not as bad as the wood. Then you have factory grips, you can find these in new condition pretty cheap. I'm planning on picking up a pair soon.

I also just picked up a 5906 from Summit. Like others have noted, mine has holster wear. I followed the advice on this forum and used green Scotchbrite pads to "repair" the areas that were worn bright from holster use. Looks great!

I got the gun on Saturday, and I shot it on Monday. I shot some cast bullets from the Lee 358-105-SWC mold and used W231 powder. The gun shot very well, better than I expected. It'll be fun trying to wear this thing out with lead bullet target loads!
