I just purchased a 5906 with Pachmayr grips on it. I would like to put some other type of grip on it. Any recommendations? I would like something with a little more roughness to it.

There are not a lot of options. There are Hogue rubber and wood grips, Pachmayr, and some NOS Uncle Mikes still around. There maybe others. However, I have been perfectly satisfied with the stock factory grips.

I am also satisfied with the factory grips on the double-stacks. Between the curved back and straight back options they should fit most people.

I really dislike the Hogues, and the tech at the S&W Perf Center doing the action job on my 5906 a couple of years ago took the Uncle Mikes that were on it when I sent it in, and refused to put them back on, replacing them with new straight-back grips. He said the design interfered with the hammer spring, causing problems with the DA pull and possible decreased hammer strike pressure.

The hogue rubber grips are a bit too big and I have medium sized hands but I think large hands would like it. The hogue wood grips though fit my hand better since they don't have the finger grooves. I also love the the hammer spring housing that hogue uses with their grips for the 3rd gen. I will agree though they are very wide.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am going to put the factory grips back on it. Probably the curved back will fit my grip better.

I had the same issue. My 1st 5906 had the Hogue rubber grips that were just too much. The 5906 I currently have has the factory grips that are much slimmer. I prefer the slimmer factory grip.

I had the same problem when I put wrap around Pachmyar on my old 59. It just made the grip too fat.

Another choice in grips are the walnut ones from KSD:

Not for small hands, however, as they are a bit thicker than the OEM plastic.

I like the factory straight grips best , feel 1911'ish. Factory curved are OK. Hogues , Pachmayr, and Uncle Mikes add too much width for me.

My double stacks ........ stippled in a fish scale pattern....stright factory grips.......
Any photos handy of those grips? Curious about the fishscale and what you used to make them.

I like the factory grips the best myself also.

I too am in the factory grip camp for the 5906. I love the Hogue rubber on my 4506 but that's a different animal.

My 4506 came with the Hougues. While shooting is a bit more comfortable, I just couldn't stand the way they looked. Did the same thing with my Beretta 92fs vertec

The Hogue 5906 grips don't have finger grooves.
