Here in NW Ohio I found a very nice condition no holster ware 5906, grips were the Hogue wood checkered with the factory grips , 1 -15 round magazines no box or papers ,Price was 450 and he would not move off it , gun was at a local gun shop , After trying several offers I did give in and purchased it for 450 out the door, After getting it I was thinking for a quality pistol like this the price was not so bad after all , what do you guys say.

A company sure couldn't build one like that and sell it for $450 today. Law enforcement trade-ins were popping up in quantity 3 or 4 years ago for about $300. Most were pretty decent, some a little rough. These have pretty well dried up and the price on 5906's is slowly creeping up. I paid $500 for one in the box with two mags, very clean but not unfired, two years ago and thought I did OK. You didn't steal yours but the price was fair and the gun will only go up in value. They are nice shooters.

About $350 - $400. When a TSW pops up they go for about $450 - $500. The best deal I ever had on a 5906 without the mag safety was $250 with blue box and 2 mags
Agree Geno. The few shops I frequent never seem to have any Third Gen. pistols and often carry nothing but tupperware models. People sure not trading in as often anymore and I am talking about rifles and shotguns too. Think he was smart grabbing that 5906 for $450.
New Checkered Hogues are going for about +or - $100 ..
That said they are tooo thick on double stack guns for me..
So a "very nice" 5906 for $350..... I might bite.... if it had fixed sights and round triggerguard.

But resold (if not wanted) reduces the OP's investment (which I think was your point).
I paid $425 OTD for my own 5906 last year. It came in its original box but I can't remember if there were 1 or 2 pre-ban magazines with it.
Didn't matter so much because I had and still have plenty. Condition was decent and acceptable to me but not perfect. There were a couple issues to deal with. More nuisance things than anything else.
I'd love to get a pristine "as-new" in original box 5906 or 5903 at some point in the future. Not a super-high priority right now but I'd figure to pay something in the $500+ range for a really nice example.
The 5906 is heavy to carry but a joy to shoot.......

The grips for me are very comfortable , It has the round trigger guard & forgot to mention at some point a new set of TruGlo Nighjt Sights were added

IIRC relamping Trijicon night sights runs about $60-70 plus shipping.....so you're into the gun for less than $300
I carried mine as a duty weapon when I had a part time police job. In fact, I pestered the chief (a friend) so much that he relented and authorized the part timers the option of carrying a semi auto. 
They are indeed a joy to shoot.
The big selling point in MA is that if they came with standard capacity magazines originally, we can buy them that way. Not an option with the M&P guns because they were made after the passage of the stupid gun laws in 1998.
The 6906 is similarly popular for the same reason.
Both of those will probably go for more in the PRM than in normal states.

My advice would be that if the aftermarket magazines are anything by Mec-Gar, to toss them in the trash.
If you plan to carry it, the 5903 might be a better option.

Anything BY Mec-Gar or anything BUT Mec-Gar? Maybe youre thinking of Pro-Mag? I've never heard of them making a bad aftermarket mag ans they are the OEM mag supplier to A LOT of firearms manufacturers including Walther, Beretta, Sig, Springfield, CZ....

Was in a local pawn shop a few months ago picking up a shotgun I'd won on GB and they had a 5903 on the shelf. Having had a 5906 briefly years ago, I'd been looking ( but not real hard) for the alloy version. No box, documents, tools, nada. $600. Now, it's in nice shape, had the Hogue rubber grips on it and two spare (non-S&W) mags, but still. $600? I don't think so. Soo... a lot of back and forth, got it for $480. I may had paid a tad more than getting it online, but factoring in an extra $60-$80 for shipping and transfer fee it's equivalent to a $400 auction bid. I think pricing here is higher than anywhere but California - I certainly never see prices like some quoted in earlier posts in this thread.
I Totally agree with you on prices , here in Toledo you seldom see any 3 rd generation pistol and when you do they ask and arm and leg for them. So all in all Iam happy with the price I paid. Next year at this time Iwill look back and say boy that was a good price I paid LOL.
I'll probably try to get back to the shop I was at yesterday and put some money down on the 5906 they had for $379. They may sale a little cheaper there since they mainly deal in polymer frame stuff, ARs and tactical gear and they give next to nothing on trade ins, I sure wouldn't trade with them. They are also a pawn shop and get guns in that way that don't get picked up, I doubt they loan much on pawns either.
