Which do you prefer? Why? Is the site the only difference? I'm looking at two 5906s one has the fixed novak night site and the other has the adjustable night site that has the guard around it. Is either of the two better in anyway?

Adjustable is always good, but my fixed novaks could hit anything so I never bothered "upgrading." I also liked the smaller slide profile, but that's just me. But either way it is impossible to go wrong with a 5906.

Honestly, I go back and forth. The Novak sights are probably better for concealed carry, less likely to snag, provide a fast sight picture and are clean looking. The adjustables allow for a one handed rack of the slide, provide a "target" style sight picture and are, well, adjustable. I actually prefer the look of the adjustable sights over the Novak sights.

I am sure someone will come along telling you to buy both, which is good advice if you have enough coin. But if not flip one in the air to decide, either way you will end up with a quality American made handgun.

I've always found the standard sights to serve my needs well enough.

The older 3rd gen adjustable sights were pretty much proprietary sights, making the parts perhaps a bit harder to find at times, and resulting in slide machining not common to other sight assemblies.

They were pretty robust with their protective sides, though.

It's not like there aren't some other adjustable sight options available for the guns with the standard Novak Low-Mount rear sights, though.

Suit yourself. Both are fine examples of the 3rd gen 5906. ;)

Just my thoughts, I tend to like the simpler windage-adjustable only sights for my purposes.

Doesn't matter to me...

I just pull the trigger when the little red dot appears where I want a hole to be.

Before I bought one I wanted the Novak sights. Then I saw this one for $245 (at Gander Mtn of all places) and snagged it. Now I just like the looks of the AS more.

I hava a 5906 with adjustable sights and wanted to change it to fixed. Instead I found a 6906 slide with night sights that works great. I think it handles better with the shorter slide. A friend who is retired from S&W told me that years ago Chicago PD ordered 5906s with the 6906 slide and that officer qualification scores improved with the shorter slide.
