5906 question.

So, I got my Puerto Rican police trade-in 5906 a couple of days ago. I can load 15 rounds in the two mags pretty easy so I'm thinking I need new mags springs. Also thought I'd get a new recoil spring. My question is on the grips. I'd like to put new grips on the pistol becasue the old ones are a little beat up. Are the Hogue grips the way to go? Plus I've seen they are a two piece grip so how do they stay on and how to the support the mainspring? Should I just wait for some new S&W grips to pop up in the classified section?

Hogue grips will add considerable girth to the grip. You can still buy factory grips from Midway or Brownells or S&W.

Hogue grips come with a plastic "block" that acts as the mainspring housing, and is held in place by the same pin that is used to hold the factory grips on. The two halves of the Hogue grip then screw into this plastic block.

And sniper47 is right, the Hogues do make the grip quite a bit fatter, so unless you have large hands the factory grips might be better for you. I prefer the straight back grips myself.

If you decide to go with the Hogues, I have a like-new set that I got in a trade, so if you would like to cover the shipping cost for them you can have them. I think I also have some like-new curved backstrap factory grips hanging around somewhere you can have too if you want to cover shipping costs.

Kudos on your new 5906. It's also my all time favorite S&W pistol, and as well my all time favorite pistol (pretty close tie maybe with the Browning Hi-Power, but I give an edge to the Stainless 5906). If you could have just a couple of handguns I'd pick the S&W 5906 and 3913, and the S&W 686 with 6" barrel.

Like the other posters, I prefer the factory style Delrin grips. I have the curved backstrap grips in black. I've mainly shot the curved backstrap grips but the straight ones feel good to me as well.

Hogue makes some beautiful checkered wood grips (as well as smooth wood). These would be great if it will be primarily a range gun. For CCW I really think the factory Delrin grips are the way to go. The gun is somewhat heavy but still rides nice and comes out of the holster easily with those grips.

I just bought a 4014 for CCW so when that comes in I might really think about getting the Hogue checkered cocobolo or checkered rosewood grips for my 5906. You can see those grips here:

The 5900 mags are not that bad to load, if you're not having any feed issues or failure to lock back on a empty mag then the springs are probably fine. I do install a new stock rated recoil spring whenever I get a used gun though.

I have Hogue grips on my 5906 and I like them a lot but I do have big hands. I like the stock grips too.

Here's some photos of the gun. I really don't want a wider grip so I guess the hogue's are out. Looks like factory smith grips are the way too go then.

for approx. $20 bucks for new grips you will have a gun that looks brand new. The metal on yours looks very nice!

You also have the "newer style" S&W 5906, as the trigger guard is rounded off. The slightly older ones, like mine, have the more squared off "combat style" trigger guard.

I see on midway usa they have both the straight and curved factory grips for under $20. Is there a consensus which is better? I really like the way the grips that are on it feel so I suppose curved is the way to go.

Go with the grips you like the most. I prefer the flat backstrap myself, but that's me. By the way that a nice 5906, congrats! Dale

I agree with other posters, your pistol is very nice. Once you replace the grips, it will look like new!

I have previously owned both Hogue rubber and wood grips, and I have gone back to the original factory curved back grips. I like the factory grips because they are thin and smooth, don't cling to clothes, holsters, etc. I once owned a 4006 with the straight back grips, but I like the curved back the best, but it's strictly a personal preference thing.

Well, I guess I'll throw mine in the ring too. I bought a 6906 about a year ago as a CC gun. As I became more familiar with the 3rd gen Smiths I decided I wanted to add a 5906 and 4506 to the collection. Here's a 5906 I just bought on Gunbroker. From a private owner, had bought it for his wife and she didn't like it because it was too heavy. So in the safe it went. Allegedly has had only 50 rounds through it. The gun is perfect in and out. Even the decocker/safety feels new.

Finally got a chance to shoot the new pistol. Wow. Love it. I was hitting silhoutes at 75 yards pretty steady shooting off hand. She's right up there with the 92fs I had. Defintly a keeper. I see why there is such a following for the 3rd gen smith autos.

I was bragging a little more than I should there. I shot two clips worth (30 rounds) at 75 yds and half of them hit the man sized silhouette. I did most of my shooting sub 25 yds like a guy should.
