5906 rear sight adjustment = hammer?

hello;

another question on 5906 rear sight adjustment. just take a deep breath and hear me out.

is it possible or has anyone removed the rear sight on their 5609 pistols, placed the dove tail part in a vice with the rear part of the sight outside vice and give the sight a good "wack" with a hammer to change the elevation of the sight?????

It sounds like you want to do this because I assume your shooting low. You might want to consider a lower front sight. Also, be sure it's the gun and not the shooter. Sometimes you can drop your wrist a little while pulling the trigger. Just my 2 cents.

thanks info the input. agree with all, the first thing to look at is op error, but the only pistols shooting low are my 5906/5903. both shoot the same amount low reguardless of distance. they are twins of each other when it come to p.o.i.

all the other 9mm i have, three rugers, one hi power, one sig all shoot to p.o.a.

shooting the 5906/5903 from a fixed rest.

the 5906/5903 have the novak night sights. at a min i wish to keep the front. easy fix is front sight replacement. if i replace the front sight, it will no longer have the feature of a front night sight.

just grabbing at straws.

You would be lucky to even get the sight out without permanently marring it.

Use a sturdy bench vise with padded jaws. Put several layers of masking tape on your slide to protect it. Use a brass drift and the heaviest steel hammer you can find. Then,when you have to order a new sight to replace the one you just damaged, you can order the correct front sight at the same time.

Anyone make a sight pusher for the gen3's? I have several that need the rear sight moved or changed.

The rear sight isn't going to "bend", if it's a night sight also it will most likely break the vials. Novaks can make you a shorter front night sight up to a certain point. Most factory front night sights were .243-248", Novak can make them down to something like .205". You will probably need a 25yd measurement for them to tell exactly what height you need.

You pretty much need an arbor press to move the sights carefully on a 3rd Gen Smith. None of my sight tools will work on factory installed sights.

As per my "Smith and Wesson Pistol Armorers School Manual"
Sights are to be removed from their dovetails "Left to Right" and installed from "Right to Left".

Contact Novak or S/W or brownells tech and get a taller rear sight for your gun. I put one of the extreme duty novaks on my smith (adjustable for elevation,with a screwdriver) and windage by tapping with a brass punch.Follow directions from bad man one. If you arent experienced have it done for you at a gunshop.But I replace them all day long by putting the slide in a rubber padded vise and wacking them in and out with a brass punch,BUT it takes some practice and if you dont have the right equipment its easy to mar the slide or break the front sight.so probably have it done.Some say its hard on the night sights but Ive never had one go out after doing it.Its the onlyway outside of buying an arbor press,or sending it to S/W.Ive never seen a sight tool that was worth a darn. good luck.

Move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go. In this case, loosen the allen screw and drift the sight to the right. Then tighten the screw back down. This will be trial and error so you're going to be able to shoot it until you get it where you want it.

Does the sight appear to be centered on the slide? Have you tried the gun off sand bags? If indeed the gun is shooting that far left at 15 yards, and it isn't a trigger control issue, the answer is to move the rear sight to the right.
I constructed a home made pusher to adjust/change my gen3 sights. They are very difficult to break loose. I have done this to several stainless gen3's and in all cases found that the carbon steel sight had corroded a bit on the bottom. I would have never broken them loose with a brass punch and hammer without destroying the sight. Here's a picture of the sight pusher. The first design required a bench vise to hold the thing together. I have since designed a version that is free standing, but haven't taken the time to put one together yet. It is necessary to remove the safety levers if so equipped. Same setup ought to work on a 1911 design as well, but I haven't tried it out on one yet.

The aluminum strips are to protect the slide from the vise and from the steel flatbar. The flatbar is 1X1/4 and the "pusher" is a 1/4X 24 Grade 5 bolt. If marring the sight is a concern, a small piece of aluminum can be inserted between the bolt and sight. Once the sight is broken loose, it can be pushed pretty easily. Prior to removing a sight, I remove the setscrew and spray some penetrating oil into the hole and allow it to set for a few minuets.
