Hi, I have a 5906 in excellent condition that I purchased from a co-worker about a year ago for $150.00. He said he hated the gun because it was so heavy. but I really like the gun and never had any experience with smith and Wesson autos and how they work. But last night I had the gun out and was admiring it and noticed that with an empty mag I dry fired it let the trigger forward until the first reset for single action even though the hammer was forward since the action didn't cycle like it would with live ammo from the first click I pulled the trigger rearward again the hammer came back about 1/8 inch and slipped forward this seemed odd to me and I went and got my p-95 and tried the same thing and it didn't do it. I understand that under normal operation the gun would cycle and the hammer would be back and this would be a non-issue but it just struck me as odd. Is this part of the normal operation of this firearm or is there a problem? thanks

Sounds normal, without allowing the trigger to go all the way forward it can't reset to D/A operation.

It's fine, the single action reset only works when the hammer has been cocked by the slide, if the slide doesn't move, the hammer doesn't cock. You must allow the trigger to reset fully forward to allow double action... And btw, you got a GREAT deal on that pistol!
thanks for the replies I just wanted to make sure nothing was wrong with the gun. I know I got a great deal he originally wanted a hundred for it and I told him it was worth more than that there were no other takers for it and I ended up giving him 150.00 how could you not love this beautiful gun its one of the pistols that Have that I have no intentions of giving up.
