OK - I just looked @ 50 pgs. of Smith autos and I believe there were only three 5943's. Why? Are they rare? Are the disliked? Are they not reliable? What gives???

They made thousands of them, and were a very poplular LE contract pistol in the early 90's. They turn up in bulk as trade-ins, then fade off until the next agency trades them in.

They also made the 5943TSW, and you might find them in nicer condition.

I was able to score two of them - I like them a lot. It seems that the DAO Smith autos never really caught on with the majority of the shooting public - it always seems most people went for the traditional DA pistols instead. The DAOs have always been more popular with law enforcement it seems, as already noted. The two I have are both LE trade ins.

It's too bad they are were not more popular.

I have one, a former Cleveland Ohio PD gun. It is one my favorite Smith 3rd Gens. I started with a 5946 but felt it was a little too heavy for EDC, so I picked up the 5943.
