I have a chance to purchase a LNIB 5946. I was surprised that it was made in 2014. I thought 3rd gen autos stopped production many years ago.
Thanks

I don't remember the exact end of the 3rd gen production for LE agency orders, but it was maybe sometime around 2014/15? Dunno. They were still running some continuing 3rd production for a handful of their larger longtime LE agency customers for some time after the commercial production was ended. If I remember right, someone from the company said that there were only maybe half a dozen longtime S&W customer agencies still able to order some 3rd gen guns until the company decided to completely cease production of them to concentrate on the M&P pistol.

You will find that your new 3rd Gen pistol was not made in Springfield, they are manufactured in the Houlton Maine facility

I think some were still run in 2015, not too sure about 2016

Yep. I was told they were planning to expand floor space for the new M&P pistol and rifle production at Springfield, so they had new equipment shipped to the Houlton plant and then provided training to the factory staff to handle 3rd gen production and repair. Those weren't the only pistols made there, of course, as the .22's, Walthers & SW1911's were also being produced there. Quite a change from the handcuff production days. (And some knives? Can't remember the trivia from those years.)

As a fan of the 59 series that is good to know, or is it, another gun or two to buy. Well knowledge is good as they say at Faber College. Thank you for posting!

Yes, the pistol was made Houlton, ME. Additionally, S&W stated that it was for the NYPD. I guess it was never issued.
I wonder if the quality matches up the the "old" 5906 pistols.
