6.5" 38/44 from 1940

I must have mis-read the trigger gauge last night, or mixed the HD up with the OD? Checked it before I went out to shoot today and it was right on three pounds? After shooting 60 rounds it has settled in at just under three. That's good enough for me! My son's coming by after work to put the rebound spring in the HD. I'll shoot it tomorrow to see how it comes out.
Jim, Thanks, I really appreciate your help!
Dick

Steve was here a while ago and finished putting the HD together. The trigger pull checked out as 3.25 lbs. Jim Dandy! Now they're both good! I probably won't shoot the HD much, but I intend to shoot the OD a lot! Thanks, Son Steve!

Glad you are back on track again Dick and Jim really knows what he's doing. Hope you're fingers ore OK. My K-32 is close to being done, wow 8 mos. Andy told me he kept the rimfire hammer and firing pin in it, it was easier for him to do. I have no clue how he got the firing pin to hit the center of the 32. Thats why he makes the big bucks! Larry

Hi Dick,
I'm very glad it worked out for you!
Yes, I don't think anyone was able to get on the forum. A lot of us were in withdrawal!

Wow, I'm surprised but that sure does simplify it.

Larry,
Good news about your .32 and my 38/44s!

Jim,
As much trouble as I've had with my computer lately, I wasn't sure what was wrong! Thanks for talking me through all this! Years ago a buddy and I both tried to work over the triggers on a pair of Taurus .357s and turn them into Smiths. I got rid of mine, never could get it to shoot a good target! From then on I've not tried to go past removing the side plate and applying a little lube. I'm not sure what my buddy did with his?
Dick

Put 50 rounds through the HD this afternoon! It's working fine, but isn't near the gun the Outdoorsman is!
Dick

The OD's are sweet guns, everyone raves on their accuracy. Thats nice that you shoot a lot Dick, I havn't been out much myself. Jim, how often do you shoot? One more week and the NE Ohio bunch meets, can't wait. Larry

I shoot in bunches. If I reload a bunch of ammo or finish a project gun I'll go several times in a row. If I get into another project I may not go for awhile except maybe for a little testing. Or if someone gives me a call to go.

I'm pretty erratic. Like eating ice cream, I may have ice cream every day for two months and then lay off until I miss it again.

Larry,
The only way I've ever figured out how to do it is to make an offset firing pin. It would look the same from the hammer side but the skinny front part of the pin would be lower and come thru the center of a centerfire recoil plate instead of at 12 o'clock.

Hey Dick and Jim, finally got the 32 from Andy tonight. Real busy with the NE Ohio bunch meeting Sat. Its looks good, will have pics soon and a post on it. He filled the bushed area and relocated the firing pin to hit center. The Keith Brown Ropers look good on it and the 5" bbl matches my ISP pre 14 over run. Life is good right now. Larry

Larry,
Outstanding, you can take it and show it off! Glad that you're happy with it.

Was a re-blue involved? Does it look like he welded up the bushed area or plugged it and re-drilled?

Received the 686, yesterday and it's Jim Dandy! Shot it, today! It's not quite as accurate as my 5" chopped 27 or my OD, but it's close. What can you expect from a 4" barrel? Trigger is right on 4 pounds and smooth. Funny thing is, it's only 2.5 ounces lighter than the chopped 27. Wish it didn't have that long under lug. More pics later.
Dick

Congrats, Larry!
Glad you finally got it! Shoot it soon and a lot and let us know how it goes!
I should receive a new to me 4" 686, soon, to replace the one I sent to Washington! Seller's pic.
Dick

It was a re-blue and some of the markings are a little washed out, not bad. Somehow he plugged the old hole and re-drilled a new one. It was all accomplished through the hole in the frame where the bbl was, amazing. I'll shoot it soon, been thinking of pulling the rear site and mounting a B-Square base for a scope so the aiming is precise. I'd put something where it grabs the bbl so it doesn't mar the bluing. To me it is the closest to using a ransome rest. After the test fire, the base would immediately come off. Larry

Larry,
Yes, a plug would have to be installed from breechface side and re-drilling the firing pin orifice of two different diameters with the diameter on the breechface side larger than on the hammer slot side; all accomplished through the hole in the frame where the bbl was. Then the original firing pin and spring installed and retained by a centerfire recoil shield which is retained by the original pin. Just like the current S&W MIM centerfire guns.
Neat and simple. He must have learned on your gun.

I asked Andy if he enjoyed doing this conversion and he said yes. At the NE Ohio bunch, Joe
said this is the way the Harvey K chuck guns were done. When I picked the gun up Thur. nite, Andy had a K-22 that had the bbl cut to 5" and was round butted. He charged 500 to do the work. The 5" bbl looked nice but the round butt looked out of place. Larry

Varmints!

Well, Boys!
I may get to try out my OD on some coyotes soon! We have bobcats and red fox, too. We had our first light freeze last night! I have a new Knight and Hale electronic game call that needs breaking in. I think if I pair that with some of those good heavy loads of 2400 behind a 358156 gas check bullet out of that 6.5" barrel, I should be good out to nearly 50 yards! I've got 160 acres of deep grass and wind breaks on my place. There ought to be more than a few coyotes out there, just waiting for a chance at a meal! We listen to them sing almost every night! Steve will back me up with a rifle for the ones that won't come in that close. Wish Derek was here!
Dick

Dick and Jim, here are the pics of the .32 long I had made. Dick, good luck on the coyotes. You have a nice spread, is it your land?

Larry,
That's just awesome and especially with those gorgeous stocks. I have forgotten, did you have the barrel cut to 5" as well?

I agree, a round butt K22 would just look out of place.
