6.5 Creedmoore, what is the allure?

.30-06.
Done
BTW whatever happened to the .300 blackout???? 30 caliber bullet in a .223 case??? Sounds pretty good but why bother when you can have the same ting at less cost using the 7.62x39.
These "new" cartridges have but one purpose and that is to sell more guns, reloading supplies, ammo etc and to provide endless internet content. Me personally I think the .300 blackout is a neat looking round and if I could buy them for the same price as steel cased 7.62x39 and shoot them out of my SKS or AK I probably would. But let's face it as long as the gun goes boom and the hole appears where we want it and in the case of actual hunting what the hole appears in dies when said hole appears all is good. I mean death is still death, it doesn't have to be by bunga bunga. In other words a dear shot through the lungs by a .30-06 is just as dead as one shot through the lungs by a .30-378 Weatherby.
All said, I DO enjoy reading about such esoteric things and the internet would be that much the poorer without such discussions

There is an article on the cartridge in this months American Rifleman.

I was wrong, there have been articles in the past, but not this month. The article I was thinking about was in the new Gun Digest.

6.5 CM

Wow! thanks for the many insights to this 6.5 CM cartridge.

New cartridge to keep industry going.
Designed right.
Injury, less kick, now I can hunt again.
I have Cartridges now that I like.
Won't buy.
A mid range Cartridge, up to deer size.
Not for Elk hunting.

Get a wildcat manual and you will see the thousands of cartridges that have been made. Industry just picks one and makes factory ammo for it and everybody has to have one. Like women buying shoes. Most guys big game is deer and shot under 200yds average. 6.5 Creedmore this year and the new XXX blaster ain’t far in the future. The biggest new thing will be in development of propellants.

It’s just another gadget for the manufacturers to sell. You want one? Buy a new rifle. Now you need a scope and mounts. Maybe a muzzle brake? Definitely dies and cases. It’s good for business! :)

The cartridge itself is nothing special. If you like to sit at the bench and pop away at paper, or shoot at plates from your bipod, it’s a nice, sedate little cartridge that makes enough power to show you a hit on steel but not abuse your shoulder too badly. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn’t even consider it in a hunting rifle unless limited to just whitetail deer and antelope, and depending on the terrain, I can think of other rounds I’d prefer for those critters. But, if it has helped the industry and keeps our hobby going, great! ;)

Why not???

I have hunted a couple of places, including the Wichita National Wildlife Refuge draw hunts, that specify .270 as the minimum caliber allowed for the elk hunt. I sold my 7mm magnum and use my .270 Win Model 70 for everything from coyotes to caribou and elk.
I asked a Federal game warden how they picked .270, and he didn't know. The Alaska game regulations also specifically mention to "bring the .270 you can shoot accurately instead of the .375 you just bought" for moose and caribou.

My son-in-law and his father went elk hunting yesterday (cows only this late in the year). His Dad took a big cow with a 6.5 Creedmoor at about 200 yds. It was his first elk. Son-in-law took a big cow with a .300 Win. Mag. at very close to 500 yds. It was his umpteenth elk. Myself, I've shot something like 30-35 with all sorts of rifles. Both of said elk were dead. A 6.5 will work on elk. So will a .243 and a .22-250 but neither are to be preferred. Fact is, if you want maximum performance at maximum range there is a price to pay - recoil is one of them. A properly loaded 7mm Rem. Mag. or a .300 Win. Mag. will beat the pants off a 6.5 Creedmoor at 1000 yds, and that's a simple fact. They shoot flatter and faster and they both carry more energy. But you pay for it with bigger guns, more noise and recoil and higher cost. The 6.5 CM is a reasonable compromise that is more efficient than many and does fairly well with less recoil and cost. I get that. But there is a reason why the military uses the .300 for extreme long range sniping (or even the .338 Lapua) and not the 6.5 CM. It shoots flatter and hits harder when you get way out there. I sort of understand the interest in the 6.5's but I think I'll just stick with the .308 Win. to 800 yds. or so and go to the magnums after that.

I sold my Sako 375H&H that I’ve had for over 50yrs. I bought new and got a deal on it from shop going out of business. Was a Finn Bear and you could shoot it all day with Full House Factory 300gr. On the other hand I have a Win m70fw pre64 that is very unpleasant to shoot standard 150g factory loads. Many times it’s the rifle more than cartridge causing excessive recoil. Also I find that buying a rifle just because you like it doesn’t mean you will shoot it well. The sucessful rifles are such that they fit the average guy fairly well. If you are shooting game on the run it is important to have a rifle that fits you. Off hand shooting is different ball game than shooting off sticks and other rests.

I have a fair number of rifles. Last year, bought a Bergara chassis rifle in 6.5 CM, for no other reason then I wanted to. Since I spend a lot of time at the range, I figured let me try something different.

Turns out not much kick, fun to shoot, and it is giving me solid 1 inch, 5 shot groups, at 300 yards. The only rifle I own that will do one inch at 300 yards is a Remington heavy barrel model 700 in 22/250. And both rifles may do better; as I don't know I am a sub one inch shooter at 300 yards. I like the gun, and can appreciate the efficiency and accuracy of the cartridge.

Spanish Fly

Fishinfool - What is that? Man, that Rifle is intriguing and neat!
I can't find it on Bergara Site.

Please, tell all, about that Bergara Chassis Rifle set up.

P.S. I have a vintage stock 1978 Rem 788 222Rem with Weaver
Scope, that if I do my part, can group bullets in a dime at 100yds,
with sleet, with light falling snow, at 3200', 32*F, off the trunk
of vintage car. Just got done reloading bullets for it.

Thank you for your insight and posting.
