6" Model 57

Hello,

Back into the .41 Magnum business!
I had to drive an hour and a half to get this one. It sat in the presentation case since new (1980?). Looks to have been shot, but if it was it was only a few rounds. The grips were dried out so I stripped them and refinished using Watco Teak Oil.
Shot it yesterday and had a BLAST. Cannot beat the trigger on this one.

Could you walk me thru a bit on how and what you stripped those grips with? And then how you applied the teak oil. AND....could you pass on please as to where you bought that teak oil?

I've got some grips on my 57 that needs re-done.

I waited a long time to find one that was really nice, but that I would not mind shooting. This one has faint freckles on the left side of the barrel. The case coloring on the trigger and hammer is wonderful!

Nice find a very sweet 57 i too just picked one up last month with 6" barrel but in nickle with presentation case also they are a sweet shooter too Enjoy!!

I also have a blued 57 with a 6" barrel. It ranks among my favorites right behind the model 27 with a 5" barrel.

i have stripped and refinished a few wood stocks on rifles, ect. i use furniture wood stripper. i put it on let it sit then scrape with a plastic or dull butter knife. the checkering you can use a bronze or hard plastic brush. when it is all stripped i use hot water with oxi-clean and a plastic brush to scrub the wood, it will remove all the oil from the wood and it will be pure wood again. then i will let it dry overnight then put it in an oven on high warm to get all moisture out and to open the pores in the wood so the stain or oil will soak deep inside.

Is the recoil from a 41 mag anything like the 44 mag?

i have had two 41s a model 57 and a ruger black hawk and the recoil is more like a 357 than a 44 mag. in fact when elmer keith had the 41 in mind it was made for lawmen and would have less recoil and penetration than a 44 mag.

Aloha,

I find recoil with Magnum loads is noticeably Less than a 44, but,

more than a heavy 357.

Hard cast target loads(210 gr bullet, 900fps) aren't wimpy, but, with

Jordon Trooper grips, very manageable during fast DA work.

That is a fine looking revolver. Great insights into repairing stocks and recoil of the .41Mag guys.
